  • A little help please

    Hey guys,
This is for everybody out there to answer but directed to Mr. Michael Stoops. I've been refinishing antique furniture for around 40 some odd yrs. To be truthful with you I had gotten to be really good. My favorite wood for refurbishing was oak. My finish of choice was lacquer , and most of my customers wanted the highest gloss possible. Strangely enough I used a great amount of Mag. products for my wood finishes. The gloss and depth that I could produce I now know were due to the quality of the Mag. products. I have probably bought and used most of what I see mentioned in these forums.
What I want to do now is to move from the hobby detailing is to me now and and move on from detailing friends and family cars to a larger scope of people. My wish is to become half as good as most of these hard working people that are posting here. I've detailed several lightly colored cars with good success . Now I've been asked to detail my wifes' employers BMW who is a doctor. He has high standards so this dark blue BMW is very intimidating to me. I'm not a true detail man and I know it. I really think that I have a real feel for this work simply because I love to do it. I've used a high speed buffer a lot and got some out standing results on the furniture. I did a lot of 2000 grit wet sanding and put as many as 15 to 20 coats on to get what I wanted . I have a PC 7424 XP on the way. What I want to know is there some sort of video that I could buy to help me remove some of this confidence problem I have with the high speed and the dark BMW? I feel sure I can handle the PC but I know that you must be more talented to detail cars than antiques. Any help from anyone would be a huge boost to me.
    Thanks everyone......

As far as going after your wifes bosses BMW with a rotory? As long as your truley comfortable doing this and have prior expierence I don't see a problem. Having said that, the DA has come along way in a very short period of time. With practice (and in most cases) you can easily achieve the same results in less time with very little risk. Something else to consider, its alot easier to ad another coat of wood stain then it will be clearcoat

There are tons of videos out there. I really don't know who to send you to though. I tend to get hypmotized by all the hacks on youtube

BTW...You say you've been working with wood for some time now. Have you ever used the Surbuf pads

No problem, except I doubt very seriously if I am smarter then you. Here are a couple of threads relating to the Surbuf pads. They were initiatlly designed to be used for polishing wood
