How to mark your backing plate

This weekend while doing a car, my pad got saturated and wasn't spinning, but it looked like it was. I've read you should make a mark on your backing plate so you can see it spin.
Question, how do you mark a black backing plate. I've tried white spray paint but it won't stick. How do you put a mark on your backing plate?

I use a paint pen. They are oil based. You should be able to find one at any stationary store. They come in handy for all sorts of things (ie. marking things before you disassemble them). Don't think of it as buying it just for your backing plate. You should get a lot of use out of it over time. I just used mine yesterday to mark the orientation on a plumbing pipe, so my outdoor tap ended up straight when I assembled the pieces inside the house. They are excellent for making markings even if the object is dirty or oily.

Hippy-hop down to your local Walgreens, K-Mart, Etc and get a SILVER Sharpie.

My backing plates are yellow and I just marked em with a Black Perm Marker....no problems for 3 years.

I thought of just marking the yellow pads with a black marker but then, what about the black pads.
Does that Paint Marker come in a white? And you're sure it will mark and stay on the black backing plate? If not I'll get a silver marker like BillE suggested.

I'd mark the backing plate, not the pads. You only have one or two backing plates and you don't throw them in the wash, like the pads.

Paint pens come in all sorts of colors, but white will be the most common. If you want different colors usually you will have to go to an art supply store or and industrial supply store. You an also check Home Depot.

Yes, I am absolutely sure the mark will stay on the backing plate. In fact it will stay on much, much better than a permanent marker.
