  • Tried M105, had strange results.

Yesterday I finally decided to try M105. Gave the car a good wash, and seeing as the car is being used as a training environment, I decided to jump right to this highly abrasive product. (I have tried a few other compounds prior, neither of which have produced the results I would like to see).

Anyway, while using with my DA, with a yellow, soft buff polishing pad, the M105 seemed to 'dry out' and actually became, nothing like a paste, but something that literally, I could blow off the surface of the car. Not only that, it wasn't producing any results.

Becoming very confused, I stopped application of it, and called it a night.

And on a completely different topic, my DA doesn't seem to be functioning properly either, it just sort of vibrates, and doesn't always rotate, from time to time, no matter how much, or how little pressure I'm actually applying to it.

    Any thoughts?

M105 is known to dust a lot especially on DA. UC has a much longer working time with less dust.

I don't know about the DA though.

Oh, so that is common? It just threw me off completely.
I'll have to give it a go with UC then.

Yeah, try UC, I think you'll like it better. I just did my friend's entire car with UC and had no dusting. Well, actually, we had dusting, but it was from the brand new polishing pad and not the UC haha.

As far as the DA goes, I don't know as I can't see it but what I can tell you is that if the pad becomes saturated, it can slip more and not spin as much as it should be. If this is the case, simply put a fresh pad on.

Yes M105 dusts alot... but by dusting it keeps the pad from gunking up, Ultimate Compound is more "oily" and doest dust much, i use UC when i have to touch up a small area or scratch that way i dont have to rewash the vehicle again

Like has already been said, M105 just happens to dust alot. You may also want to try work smaller sections and I always work it longer than most would think. I usually work it till its pretty clear and has diminished pretty well. There is a bit of a learning curve to M105 I think and once you pass that hump its amazing!

As for the DA im not sure, do you have the backing plate marked with a sharpie so you can better see the rotation?

Be careful. I hope you mean that the amount of product has diminished and not the product itself. M105 uses SMAT which does not allow for the abrasives in the product tp diminish.

yes I am regarding the product on the paint. I do not mean to say that the 105 is breaking down and its not exactly that it goes away, I just work it a bit longer than what most people will do. Just have to experiment and see how the paint responds to different types of buffing.

What DA do you have? Sounds like theres a problem there for sure. If its not rotating then no matter what you use, it aint gonna workout. Once you get your DA sorted out, you might also try saturating the pad with 105, then just add a couple pea sized dots as needed. Also, you might try stepping it up to an orange pad

Thank you everyone for the help with the M105 question!

Obviously, I know it's going to, but I mean the actual pad. It doesn't appear to rotate at all.

I'll have to try a new pad and see what's up.
