  • Light film after polishing

I wet sanded and cut and buffed my car and after i apllied the polish it left a light film on the paint. All the scratches are gone. Do i need to polish more? Use a different product? different pad? more or less polish while buffing? any help would be great thanks

What was your exact process? Wetsanded with what grit, cut with what product and pad combo, and applied what polish? Do you have any pics?

It could be over-saturated microfibers not allowing all of the dried wax residue to be removed... Pics help, not sure what your definition of "film" is...

Wet sanded with 1000, 1500 then 2000, cutt with meguiars compund with a wool pad. Then polished with turtel wax polishing compound with a pad thats like a microfiber type. Ill ty and post a pic. It looks shinny with no scratches but dependin the light and angle u look at it u can see areas that look like a reflective film from the polish but i polish it over and over and its still there

The film actually could be hazing caused by the TW Polishing Compound. Not the best stuff. I would go with a Megs polish.

            Re: Light film after polishing

Which of our compounds did you use for the initial cut? M105, M95, M85? You did use a high speed rotary buffer, right? Not a D/A or orbital?

There's a very high probability that you left holograms in the finish that were not removed with the TW polishing compound and the microfiber pad. A follow up with M205 or M82 with a finishing pad on a rotary should do wonders for clearing up the finish.

Any chance you can capture in a picture what the finish looks like.

                    Re: Light film after polishing

Or so I thought so i took it in the sun afterwards and it looked great but the other day i must have caught it at the right angle and there was still holograms... They are much better but still there! I used MG 105 compound/red pad then swirl remover/yellow pad the mg 205/black pad

                      Re: Light film after polishing

It can be very difficult to finish totally hologram free with a rotary buffer, especially for a new user. When you used the M205/black pad combo, what speed was your buffer at? You should be down to somewhere between 1200 and 900 rpm to remove the last of the holograms, depending on the paint. You also need to keep the pad as flat as possible on the paint and move it in very slow, methodical movements across the paint. This is a bit of a time consuming process that requires patience and skill - you really are sort of finessing the paint at this point and you really can't rush the process.

Now, if you were really aggressive with the compounding step (very high speed, fast movements, a lot of angle on the pad) then you could have inflicted some surprisingly deep holograms that will take a properly done intermediate step to remove. You can't be overly aggressive with that intermediary step either or you'll just trade out one set of holograms for another. But with a quality wool pad, M105 and good technique you should be able to go straight to M205 on a finishing pad to clean everything up.
