  • Clay Bar

I jut clayed my Neon this past weekend and I found that the clay bars were not very plyable and they really did not last too long. By that I mean that they did a great job at picking up the dirt from the paint finish great but they got all "grey" from it all after about 1/4 of the car was done. Are they still usable or should I toss them and get more? I tried to get as much as I could out of them but I felt that I needed to do a great job and not mar the finish by using them too long. HELP!

    Re: Clay Bar

How were you using them? What condition was the car in?

Generally you would flatten the bar out (some cut it in half first to get a smaller piece) and clay using one side. when that one side got dirty, you would fold it in so you have a ball of clean clay showing again, and repeat.

If a car has not been detailed much, it is certainly possible to use up a lot of clay, but it is rare for a whole box to be used on a 1/4 of the car, though possible if in real bad shape.

I'm hoping you washed the car good before you used the clay? If so, you should be fine splitting the clay in 1/2 and using both 1/2s on the entire vehicle (at most).

Even on a nasty car, you should be able to clay the entire vehicle.

        What was your technique?

I tried clay for the first time last night. It was actually quite addictive rubbing it, listening to the squidgy noise, then suddenly silence...

Anyway, for a 8 year old car, when I bought it, it is in immaculate condition, and I've been washing and spray waxing weekly since I bought it just over a month ago (this is my first really thorough detail today)... and I snapped the clay in half and while it was a little dirty after rubbing my entire car, I've kneeded it back into a pretty clean looking peice of clay.

Out of interest, it was really only the roof and bonnet that seemed to be that 'dirty'..

Not unusual at all. The horizontal surfaces tend to be the dirtiest as fallout falls on them and sticks to them easier simply due to gravity. The vertical surfaces are vertical and therefore fallout has a much harder time bonding to these sides.

Is this okay to do? Once you use it you can just knead it back together? I was under the impression once you used it (and then maybe folded it in half once) you had to toss it and use a new piece?

                Re: Clay Bar

there are links everywhere showing you how to clay.. i use about a quarter of a bar for the entire car... then again my car is 3 years old and i was weekly... but you should be able to use half a bar for one car one time (at least)

I just clayed the nastiest vehicle I've ever bought- this was from 1/4 of the hood of my new 2000 Explorer:

This was from the rear tailgate window... AAAHHHH!!!!

I used most of a new tub of Medium clay on this truck...

If a vehicle is that nasty, I will mist it with Body Solvent and wipe it down first.

I didn't think it was that bad- I stripped it, and it felt somewhat decent. It was only after I started that I got wide-eyed and very liberal with the UQD...
As usual, the hood, roof, and tailgate were the worst offenders. The sides weren't much at all, about on par with teh horizontal panels on a normal clay job.

Are you using UQD for claying duties? I don't think it was designed for that purpose, maybe you should try Last Touch for claying.

UQD should work as well as QD.

UQD is too slick to clay with. LT at 1:1, FI or QD are best for claying.

                              Yeah, dont want UQD.

You are coating the dirt you are trying to remove with an extremely slick polymer coating.
