  • Questions about Colorx/Swirlx...

I used Colorx for the first time last month and loved it, it really did help restore the depth of color in my car. I just picked up Swirlx last night and won't have a chance to try it out until next week but I was wondering if you guys could answer a few questions for me?

    1) It is my understanding that all-in-ones aren't quite as efficient as dedicated cleaners, so does Swirlx do a better job of cleaning the paint since it's a cleaner/polish as opposed to an AIO like Colorx?

    2) Does Swirlx contain more polishing oils than Colorx or are they similar?

    3) Does anyone know if the wax in Colorx is carnauba or synthetic?

I'm still in the process of learning how to properly detail my car. I want to learn all I can so when I buy a brand new car I can keep it in the best condition possible, and so far all the members on this board have been very helpful.

    1. Yes, assuming applied properly, worked in a bit.

    2. Similar, maybe a hair more in SwirlX.

    3. A blend as far as I know. Meguiars does not make a pure carnuba.

    Wash
    Clay
    ColorX
    Nxt

will keep any new car looking pretty perfect, with the occasional SwirlX for a deeper cleaning. And ScratchX/UC if anything bad happens.

      Re: Questions about Colorx/Swirlx...

Thanks Murr. I was under the impression that Swirlx is similar to Colorx only without the wax so I wanted to give it a try just to compare. If I liked it I was going to use that instead of the Colorx for polishing. I usually polish/wax my car every 2 months, is that too often to use Swirlx?

2 Months is fine. You should be able to work it in midly as well, not loads of passion like for swirl/scratch removal, and still get a bit 'deeper' of a cleaning.

If you are going to go with the recomended 2 coats of wax, ColorX just makes it a bit quicker.

        Would be:
        Wash
        Clay if needed
        Clean: SwirlX
Pure Polish: Optional, if you wanted to some time.
        Wax
        Wax

If you want a more effective all-in-one product try Paint Reconditioning Cream D-151 from Detailer's Line. It comes as 1-gallon bottle or you can get a small sample from ADS. It's very versatile and you can control its aggressiveness by machine/ pad combination: rotary/ cutting pad the strongest, DA/ finishing pad the weakest. For extra protection you can still top it with your favorite wax.
Of course UC/ SwirlX + Nxt Tech Wax/ Carnauba Plus will still give you better results. But if your paint has some small problems D-151 would be a good shot.

Greg- My paint does have some minor issues, nothing too bad but definitely blemishes that Colorx couldn't get rid of. Would I be able to apply the D-151 by hand?

                  Well...

D151 can be used by hand, but Tim hasnt given it the best reviews by hand. Supposedly easier to use by machine.

                    Re: Questions about Colorx/Swirlx...

As other guys said unfortunately PRC gets more aggressive with machine applications. I expect that hand applying will get in the same result range like ColorX.

For small area problems with hand application I would give it a shot with ScratchX.

I've witnessed what Ultimate Compound can do first hand while attending Maguiars free class today. tell you what It made me a believer when Mike used it on a terrible repainted 09 Black Benz. I've personally used swirl x and it was not enough of an abrasive for what I needed. You did not mention the condition of your paint but again what I learned today, its almost a science with what pad/compound/polish you need. But starting off with least abrasive is the best way to go. Ultimate Compound will work on most jobs out there for car enthusiats and not pros. Good luck.

Oh yeah dont forget to clay or your wasting your time. You'd better be ready for many hours and a sore body using swirl x by hand.. I've tried it and never will again. Seen Mike do a section by hand and its nowhere near the result as using RO or Rotary, perhaps if you spend 10 minutes on your 2x2 foot section then you might see a great result.
