  • Vehicle Side Mirrors

    Hello Everyone,

Recently, I used a Meguiars Medium Cut Cleaner to clean the "hard water spots" on my Vehicles Glass. Worked like magic and all the hard water spots are gone. Well, now, just on my outer side mirrors, the glass itself, I have a "webbing/scuffing/circular marks". The marks are not etched and cannot be felt by running your fingers over it.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a product, possibly a glass polish, that would help remove those marks?

    Thanks for any answers!

    Re: Vehicle Side Mirrors

If you scratched the glass itself on the side mirror, I am not sure those can be removed. Are you sure you have actual scratches in the glass and not just residue from the M01 (Medium Cut Cleaner)? I have heard of using even more aggressive items on glass without the slightest issue of scratching. M04 Heavy Cut Cleaner is often used to remove hard water spots on glass without the a problem.

If they really are scratches then your best bet would be to buy a glass polishing kit such as the one ADS offers: http://www.autodetailingsolutions.net/glasskitpro.html. However, I am not sure that scratches on the mirror can be removed at all. I would say to wait for more responses from more qualified individuals. I hope that I have heard wrong in the past and that they can be removed.

Could it be behind the glass? I've seen on some mirrors that they have a piece of shiny silver plastic, almost like cling wrap, behind the glass to create the mirror effect, and they are known to get brittle and crack with age.

That was my next thought too. Are vehicle side mirrors even glass? Or some form of reflective composite?

See if you can find out if indeed they are glass. Then if they are. Do a test spot with the #4. But, find out first.

#4 wouldnt help swirls on glass.

But if it is plastic, something like PlastX could.

My thinking was that if it was a composite #4 would be a good option to make them less noticeable. Without damaging them were you could not see a reflection.

Yeah, could be that the foil backing of the mirror has been damaged. I don't think they're glass.

                    Re: Vehicle Side Mirrors

I had a similar experience with M80 polishing the side mirrors on my work truck. I got a little over zealous on the drivers side and now have a dark spot near the center of the mirror, with what looks like cob webs going out from the center of the spot.

The mirrors are plastic with a reflective material on the face, not the back. If you're getting something similar, STOP. Don't polish any further or you'll remove the reflective material and just have a piece of black plastic.

As far as a fix goes, I haven't found one, except to replace the mirror.
