  • Cleaning / Polishing Glass

Hey guys, normally I just clay bar the glass then use some glass cleaner. Lately Ive noticed on some of my older cars that the glass has tiny dots and even scratches in it. Is it possible to polish glass, or am I stuck with it?

    Re: Cleaning / Polishing Glass

Recently I detailed a Escalade with this problem. i used the glass polishing system i bought from ADS. It worked wonderfully. May not remove the pitting, but should help out on the scratches tremendously.

+1 . It depends on the severity of the scratch. The kit from ADS is a good way to start.

Good to hear, thanks for the info. Im guessing you cant just polish glass like you polish paint though? I dont mind buying the ADS kit if I have to, but I have soooo much stuff around, it'd be nice to use something I already have.

If its a scratch - you need cerium oxide coupled with a felt/rayon pad. That's basically in the glass polishing kit. Glass is much harder then paint but its still polishable. Just go slow, constant pressure and watch the heat on the glass.

Pitting - so far the pitting I came across are not fixable via polishing - so its either live with it or just get a replacement.

I was a rookie at first. Followed the directions. Worked flawlessly.

Thanks again guys, I'll order the kit from ADS and see how it goes. I always assumed you could just use regular compound on glass...glad I checked here first

You can, but it wont do anything. Good for removing gunk though.

Try Autogeek's Diamondite Glass Repair System for machine aplication. Works pretty good and can be used with rotary/ DA/ orbital or drill.

Maybe I just got lucky but I have actually used rubbing compound and a wool pad on glass to remove light marks. I took some water spots out of the passenger window of a PT Cruiser and some type of light etching from another customer's Nissan Pathfiner.
