  • 20 year old car... Now what?

    Hi,

Been looking and searching the forum for the last 2 hours but couldn't find instructions on how to restore the paintwork on a second hand car that is about 20 years old.
I am looking for a step by step process with the correct products to use.

The car has a lot of swirl marks but no deep scratches.

Could someone please tell me which products I need to use and in which order. (If this has been discussed before please point me to the location.)

    cheers!

    Greetings Ben,

A step-by-step is a pretty tall order with the scant info you provided. I looked around and didn't see an article titled "How To Restore The Paintwork On A 20 Year Old 2nd Hand Car".

What year and make of car? Pictures highlighting defects would be helpful. The first thing you need to determine is if you're dealing with a base coat/clear coat finish or single stage paint. (Single stage is easily determined by doing a test spot with a paint cleaner or polish. If some of the color transfers to your applicator pad you're removing some of the top layer and that'd be single stage) There's different methods for restoring each.

Here's a thread on determining what you've got:

Are you working by hand or are you planning on machine polishing? What are your desires and expectations? Looking for perfection or merely shining up the finish and removing the worst of the swirls and minimizing scratches? Is the car a daily driver or is it a garage queen?

Provide some more details and there'll be a ton of folks to lend advice and recommendations.
