  • car wash/bug removal

So, I'm almost out of Optimum No Rinse, and wondering if I should maybe try something else out, heres why:

I find that bug guts from the front of my car are getting kind of tough to remove, I have a feeling that maybe my wax layer is getting a bit thin, so I probably should do another wax, but still ONR doesn't seem to do a great job of removing bug guts. I take the car to a car wash and I'll spray down the front (sometimes just with the rinse, othertimes with the pre-soak then rinse) to get the big bits off, and this takes off most of it. What is left is usually a little bit of crust on the car. With a careful fingernail it comes off pretty easy, but if I'm just washing with ONR and a wash mit, it never seems to come off (unless I would scrub more, something I don't want to do).

Now I'm wondering if there was maybe a different car wash similar to ONR that I could try that may handle this a bit better, or is there something that I can spray on the front end to kind of "pre-soak" it at home before I wash it with ONR, to start to lift up the crusty dried on bits, and then have the ONR/Wash Mitt wash them away? I try to do this with the ONR, I'll squeeze my wash mitt over the front end before I wash it, but it doesn't seem to do to much.

So what do you guys think? Should I keep on with ONR, is it as good as I'll get? Something to Pre-Soak it with first? Or should I maybe just bite the bullet and do a Cleaner Wax on it to freshen up the wax layer and clean it at the same time. It was a couple of months ago for my last wax job, and I was hoping to last till fall.

    Thanks guys!

You should pre-treat the bugs with a bug and tar remover before washing, I use turtle wax bug and tar remover ( works like a charm ) , those coin ops usually have pressure washers so you might be able to blast the bugs off without even touching them. Repeat if necessary then wash the car because you don't want to scratch any thing.

I heard you guys have a ton of mosquitoes in Manitoba

Thanks, I think I'll try and get a bug and tar remover and see if that helps. The pressure wash does get most of the off, I just need something a bit more to get the dried on stuff off.

I think I'll go ahead and order more ONR, cause otherwise I am very happy with it. I live in an apartment, so I'm scared to try something else that needs alot of rinsing, as I don't have access to a hose to rinse the car off. It's kind of a unique product and tough to replace for that reason. I would love to try gold class, but having to rinse makes it tough for me.

We're plagued with mosquitoes in Alberta. Just this past week. I just finished removing an F150 full of tar and bugs with Body Solvent. It worked quite well.

Can try a wet drier sheet.

Using the Bug and Tar type products will remove the wax.

This is what I was worried about, the Bug n Tar stuff removing the wax layer.

I'll try a wet drier sheet, thanks. Just use it to work the bugs off right? Or do I leave it on the bug spots to let it soak and loosen them up?

Wet the dryer sheet. Rub it across the area. Rinse, repeat.

Then clear rinse the affected area.

              Wax.

I just started with the dryer sheet, not sure on if it is complete wax removal or not. Doesnt seem as bad as the Bug and Tar.

I have been using the dryer sheet for about 4 years. Just for being on the safe side, I always reapply wax.

With the ease the dryer sheet removes the bugs. I think it is also removing the wax. Just my own personal preference.

I spray Super Degreaser at 10:1 strength on, then let it sit while I fill a gallon or two of water. Then going back on forth between the bugs and the water with a cheap bug sponge I got at Advanced Autoparts work until its clean. This works great at getting all the bugs off. Then I proceed with an ONR wash.

                      Thanks guys,

It's to bad there isn't anything that can do the bugs but not the wax. I guess if it's strong enough to take stuck on bug guts off then it's probably going to take wax off as well. I guess I'll just end up waxing the front of my car weekly it seems lol.
