  • Tire Dressing Sling Help???

Well, I've been using Meguiar's Gold Class Endurance Shine Liquid (in the bottle) for a while and love the appearance and longevity.

BUT, it slings up on the sides of the car no matter what I do.

I've cleaned the wheels thouroughly with Westley's bleche white, to the point where no black comes up on your finger after rubbing the tire. I've wiped the dressed tire with a clean cloth 15+ minutes afterwards to get rid of the excess. None of this stopped the problem; it still slings up onto the car: really annoying me.

I've read other threads saying that doing these things is supposed to stop the problem but it hasn't stopped it for me.

    Please Help!!!

Do your tires have raised letters or letter with serrated edges? I have found that tire dressing will sit in these tiny ridges and sling off. Try using an old paint brush to prevent the puddling.

    Hope this helps,

My guess is that you are putting too much on to start with. That and you might want to try letting it dry for several hours or over night before driving.

IMHO people use way too much dressing as it is. I use Hyper Dressing at 4:1 and just spritz a little on the tire and allow it to migrate. Again, I use _very_ little of the dressing.

I also use just soap and water to clean the tire. I read of people caking dressing onto the tire and then using caustic chemicals to remove it as it's all gunked up.

My tires have the standard letters, I don't know what to call them, but they are not raised.

I have let it sit overnight before, and it doesn't help. I would think that wiping off the excess after applying would get rid of the application of too much product. I may try using less, but I just want full coverage.

Do the letters have small lines going through them or anything that could cause product to puddle in them. I think this may be the issue you are having. Normally, what I do is dry the tires and spray them before drying the vehicle. I then dry the car or truck, and go back again and wipe the tires. I use Hyperdressing, but have used endurance before and know what you are talking about as far as slinging. Dressing can also sit in the tire bead where it meets the rim and puddle and sling.

I suggest being careful around the rims of your wheels. What can happen if you use too much dressing, is the dressing fills the void between the the rim and the tire. This is a great place for dressing to hide until you decide to drive. Then it sling all over the place. Likely you will see lines all the way from the rim to the outer edge of the tire. If you see these lines you will know that where it came from.

There was just a thread on little make-up sponges. They look like cheese wedges. These would be great for getting dressing in the space between the wheel and the tire without getting too much in that area.

Good luck. A little goes a long ways.

I would try using less product. After applying with the paint brush. Use a foam tire applicator to even out the gel. It will also remove a lot of the excess. Then 15-20 minutes later, wipe them one more time. It should solve your problem.

Those lines are exactly what I get! Thank you so much, I'll try that immediately.

This is the type of brush I use to dress my tires. It works awesome. The millions of little bristles are great for getting into ridges, lettering etc.

What I normally do is dress the face of the tire with the brush. Once the brush is almost dry I do the area near the rim.

The brush is actually made for putting pipe dope on threads. It's made for getting into tight cracks.

FWIW, I use water-based tire dressings. I use an Eagle One sponge to apply. After 30+ minutes of drying time, I use the the second sponge (they come in packages of two) to remove excess dressing. So far, sling has not been a problem for me. Of course, water-based dressings do not last as long as solvent-based dressings; but they last long enough for my purposes, and clean-up is easier.

I recently got some of the Endurance gel from the states (haven't seen it on the shelves here); thanks a lot for the useful info as I was wondering how best to apply it. Hadn't really even considered the "sling" effect.
