he said truck wasnt running right. lean fuel mix would make the exhaust hotter and possibly damage paint? dealer said fuel filter was plugged and air/fuel mix was running lean.

I think the paint is the least of his worries as a lean fuel mixture could burn a valve, or a piston. If the fuel filter was plugged, the engine would not run period.

The tailpipe looks dark, more of a sign of running rich. I curious if modifications have been made to this vehicle. In the last photo the tailpipe doesn't look like it come out far enough to expel the exhaust properly

First I would look into the source of the issue. If you don't fix/eliminate the source there isn't much sense in attempting a restoration. Likely it will go back to the same condition and you'll simply have less clear coat in a area the needs it.

I'm not sure where I would start. I'm puzzled.

I'm surprised that didn't come off with the products you mentioned.

How were you working them in?

with a pc. do not have rotary. had good luck with another brand (can we name other brands on this forum ?) of compound when using it on stained paint and overspray. wouldnt touch it though.

no mods stock with roughly 30,000 miles. driver is in early 60s. daily driver roughly 60 miles to work). i noticed tailpipe was roughly 5 inches or so underneath bed. never seen any issues with gm or fords (gas or diesel) with poor aftermarket exhaust installs when under the bed.

If an engine is running rich it can deposit a lot of material on body panels near the exhaust tip, but that should easily buff out with a wide variety of products. In fact, we just did that last night at our TNOG on an aftermarket turbocharged Mazda RX7:

                              Before:

                              After:

But if you're dealing with actual heat damage to the paint and not just carbon deposits, then you may never be able to fully correct it with buffing. It may need to be stripped and repainted. Without seeing it in person it's a bit difficult to tell if it's just "dirty" or truly "damaged".

Oh, and 04mtngoat, we have no problems at all with you or anyone else mentioning other products on MOL. We know there are plenty of products on the market that could have corrected the issues on the RX7 above. If the one you've used successfully before is not fixing the issue on this truck, and other products being suggested in this thread aren't doing the job either, then we suspect you have a more serious issue on your hands.
