  • Gray Mustang detail. Need help

    Hey guys,

I'm detailing the stang and i need to know what products you guys recommend for the color and paint quality. It has a few minor scratches but that is it. However, on the front bumper, there are a lot of white marks that are indented into the paint. Could anybody please tell me what these are? Also there is a spot on one of the rims and I dont know what it is.
    Here are the pictures:

    The rim:

    The front bumper:

    The front bumper:

    And the Body:

    Again:

Thank you, and what products do you recommend for use when following the 5 step cycle for paint. I will do everything by hand.

The black mark on the wheel looks like tar. Can you feel it? Can you tell if its on top of the surface or does it feel smooth? Try body solvent or a bug and tar remover.

The white marks on the bumper look like rock chips. Not a lot you can do about those.

My silver g6 has tiny chips like yours on the bumper too. They are rock chips, only thing that can be done is repaint, *****, i know. You can also try and clay that mark off your rims but get rid of that piece of clay once you use it on your wheel.

          Wheel

The black debris on the wheel does look like something you picked up on the road. I'd try some generic tar remover and see if it does the trick. Once the debris gone throughly wash the wheel and wax it to protect the finish.

          Bumper

The damage to the front skin is a combination of bugs and road debris. Some of the damage might be superficial and can be removed with some scrubbing and a clay bar. If the damage is deeper you have two options; touch-up and repaint the entire piece.

These are some of the product's I'd recommend trying. You have a gorgeous ride and to keep it in tip top shape takes some effort.

          • Clay
          • Swirl Remover – example Meguiar’s M105
          • Finishing Polish – example Meguiar’s M205
          • Finishing Polish – example Menzerna Polish PO85RD
          • Isopropyl Alcohol Clean
          • Wax - #26 Yellow Wax or Collinite 845,

Once you restore the front fascia to pristine condition I recommend applying something like 3M's Scotchgard Paint Protection Film

Yeah that bumper looks like it's infected with bug etching. I'm pretty sure nothing less then a repaint is going to help. My black focus has them all over the front bumper too and nothing I've tried has helped it one bit.

For those who fought for it, freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.

Thanks guys. I have babied this car around for years now and have been paying hundreds of dollars everytime to a detailing shop. Just lately, I realized that I could be doing all of this at home because its a nice hobby to have and I enjoy it. I guess I will just get the bumper repainted.

Any ideas on how much that will cost? I guess I need primer/color/ and clear coat.

It's difficult to tell from the photos, but it doesn't look like any of those rock chips have actually broken through the paint. They may be able to sand it down and re-apply clear coat. Maybe a minor touch up here and there.
I do recommend the 3M protective film. That might run you a 100-$200. They will laser cut it to your car and it will look good.

Honestly if it were me, I'd consider this. They may be able to sand the clear coat down, touch it up a bit and install the 3M film without doing any painting. This would be the cheapest option and it's likely quite adequate. The 3M film has UV protection in it so any loss of UV in the clear coat should be compensated for.

Just a bit of food for thought. Just trying to save you a few bucks. I'd have a pro look at it and I'd want a guarantee on the work.

Thanks. I am going to take it to my friends paint shop and see if he could just sand it. Knowing him, he'll probably just repaint it for me free lol.
