But used repeatedly, it will dry things out.

Murr, I respect your knowledge greatly, however do you have any proof, "things" will dry out? As mentioned my Dad has used Dawn and other cheap soap to wash his car for year, and nothing has dried out. Granted, he doesn't drive the car daily and it is garaged all the time. The clearcoat is fine, it may have some swirls, it probably has a lot, but being silver, they are hard to see. The only thing that can dry out, in my opinion, are the weather seals, and being an engineer, he has always put silicone grease on the seals.
I am not advocating Dawn..it is dish soap, and a dedicated auto soap, is preferred, but we should be note scaring the heck out of people.

Dish soap is noted for removing oil. We've seen lots of examples of died up paint on this forum (search crows feet).

Crows feet is not caused by dish soap. All paints will crows feet or go alligator skin. It is caused by heat. (according to a retired Boeing engineer...my Dad)
He laughs at me for waxing my car, and I laugh at him for not. His car looks good, and so does mine. Who knows.

Just wash your skin and hair with dishsoap for a week if you need proof.

Crows feet is not caused by dish soap. All paints will crows feet or go alligator skin. It is caused by heat.

What does heat do... it causes things to expand. What happens to things that expand that are dry... they crack.

I am not advocating Dawn..it is dish soap, and a dedicated auto soap, is preferred, but we should not be scaring the heck out of people.

The goal is to inform people, not scare them. Even if a one time use will inflict little damage, just like washing your hair with dish soap, it's repeated us that we want to avoid. Why advocate doing something that is unnecessary?

All hypothesis but not a single proof from experience/real life that dawn will cause problems down the road.

What does heat do... it causes things to expand. What happens to things that expand that are dry... they crack.

My wife's hands probably look better than yours, and you are a lot younger. I am sure she would rather wash her hands in Dawn than have autowax on them every day.

Paint IS dry already. That is why your finger doesn't stick to it. Adding anything to a clearcoat does NOTHING to add oils. It may protect, but it adds nothing. Clearcoat is a water based covering to automotive paint, be it lacquer or acrylic underneath. Oils do not penetrate it. Oils/waxes cover and protect it, they to NOT penetrate. We are not talking about a fine oak or redwood dining table.

I am not advocating anything, I am just trying to let people know, that in my experience, Dawn will not hurt their vehicles. But as I said, it is preferable to use a soap designed for vehicles...but only as it does not strip wax. Otherwise, it is harmless as rain water. We are talking pH...simple...we are not talking paint thinner...which IS save to use to remove tar on a vehicle, but not safe to wash your hair in it.

While I am at it, my grandmother used to get up every Saturday morning to wax the floors. Then they came out with no-wax floors (a covering much like clearcoat) and she stopped waxing every Saturday. The floors shone no matter what. Sure they got scraped..I remember a fallen butter knife making a mark on the shinny floor. My point is, with a clear coat on your vehicle, waxing a single stage paint became obsolete. Newer cars have a no-wax finish.
I have never waxed my car since clearcoat was the normal, , my daughter waxes till she is blue(line) in the face. I blame a past boyfriend on that. Caring for an expensive car is only right..whatever one can to to protect it is appropriate... it is even fun.
Do what pleases yourself...but lets not get false information out. Meguiar's has great products..I am not saying otherwise.
