  • fading red paint

hello i have a 99 chrysler cirrus and i have spent loads of my time and money to get it looking like brand new, But i just cant get to get the trunk lid to look like brand new. some of the paint on the lid looks like it turning orange but the clear coat is still nice and shiny. Is it possible for the red paint to be fading but the clear coat not. BTW i used Ultimate compound with a porter cable and tried doing two applications ( if thats what you call it) then waxed to see if it would help but it still looks orange

Please allow someone with more experience to chime in. Do not take this as advice.

My guess is that the clear coat didn't provide the UV protection it was supposed to and the red paint is faded underneath. You'll typically see this on horizontal panels, bumpers etc. parts that are highly exposed to the sun.

I doubt this will work, but perhaps an experienced forum can comment. What about heavy doses of M07, could this penetrate the clear and perhaps recondition the red paint below.

M07 works well for single stage paint, but my guess is the only cure is going to be repainting the trunk.

I'm curious about the orange tinge, usually read fades to pinkish white. Perhaps you could post some photos.

Its possible. Paint on different panels can be different types as well.

A pic might help more, but if it is really under the clearcoat, you wont be able to do much for the color.

Have you always owned the car? No chance of the panel being re-painted, etc?

no i just bought the car this march. And i will post pictures tomorrow as right now it is night time and i only have my phone which doesnt have flash. I wonder if i could use that turtle wax color magic JUST FOR THE TRUNK lid thats fading. I normally would never buy anything turtle wax brand but if it helps my trunk until i can get it repainted it will have to do. and also i dont know if it has anything to do with it but the red is a metallic pearl tinted red
