  • Pads/Bonnets for Wax Removal

    Hi,

I recently purchased a G100 and a "partial" Solo Starter Kit (contains 1 backing plate and 4 pads). I also have a Bonaire 10" orbital buffer/polisher which I only used once. I have I read on the forum that a 7" bonnet over a Soft Buff 2.0 Foam cutting pad W7207 can be used to remove wax.

    My questions are:
    1. Can a 7" bonnet be used with Wool Cut Heavy Cutting Pad WWHC7 or Wool Cut Light Cutting Pad WWHL7 (they came with the SOLO kit)?
    2. Since it is wax removal as oopposed to polishing/defect removal would the Bonaire with its 10" bonnets be satisfactory or will the G100 still do a better job?

Actually, that is an odd combo....The So1o System (liquid & pads) is designed to be used with a rotary buffer.... What are you working on and what are you trying to achieve?

While I am sure some have tried that combo with success, you are really not using the pads in a way they were designed or tested to be used....The foam has been tested and tried much more which means you can have confidence it works.

If you are just removing wax, the bonaire may do an ok job. Just make sure they have quality bonnets that do not load up with product.

The G100 Dual Action Polisher really excels at removing defects and applying wax.

    Hope this helps.

      Re: Pads/Bonnets for Wax Removal

Thanks for the reply Mike. I got both the G100 and the Solo Pads at 75% off. Unfortunatley I discovererd that the Solo is for rotary after the purchase. From what I was reading the wool cutting pads are not to be used with the DA so I would only use the bonnet with them since i already have them as opposed to buying the W7207 to use with a bonnet for wax removal. I also read somewhere that the diamond polishing and finishing pads are gentler that the flat pads b ut not to use diminishing abrasive products with them with the G100. I purchased a foam polishing pad and a foam finishing pad to start out with and I intend to buy at least the 6 pack with a mix of foam 2.0 polishing and finishing pads mix.

The car I am working on is the one in my profile a silver 99 Corolla. I plan to use Ultimate Compound and Gold Class Wax. I have used Cleaner Wax and Gold Class Wax applied by have in the past with good results but I should get better results with the G100.

I will use the G100 for wax removal instead of the Bonaire. Is there a foam pad that is recommended for waz removal or would I still use the bonnet over W7207?

FWIW - Some people have tried So1o with a DA, but optimal results & experience is with a rotary. That is correct, we don't recommend using the wool cutting pad on a DA. In addition, I can say I have never heard of anyone using bonnet over a wool pad on a DA for removal ? as they say "user beware"

"Gentler" may be a stretch....The grooves in the pads actually allow the pad to buff a bit smoother when using a rotary.

Good call - stick with 2.0 pads moving forward and you should be pleased.

Stick to the W7207 for removal....

You can use a cutting pad for wax removal? With or without the bonnet???? Sorry, I'm confused...

It would be a cutting pad, with a microfiber bonnet over it.

Aha - that's what I thought. Isn't just easier to remove by hand?

Probably goes a little quicker by machine. Certainly looks good.

But which bonnets can give you a thick pile that you get from the towels? My towels are really really thick. Just got some new ones, and they're seriously like bath towels they're so thick and they're just awesome at removing wax. Any bonnets like that?

I've always preferred wax/sealant removal by hand over machine removal.

Different strokes I suppose, as they say

The bonnets are actually more like the Ultimate Wipes, very low pile.

Yeah, I like the thicker pile. I'm gonna stick with the towels!

                          Nothing wrong with that.

Though if you ever get a chance to get an Ultimate Wipe for a good price, they are nice, esp for a final wipedown sort of thing.
