Will Hot Rims Chrome Polish remove rust from chrome tips on tail pipe? If not, what, if anything, will?

    Re: Rust on chrome

I've used NXT Metal Polish and the Marine Line Metal Polish to remove light red rust from chrome plated steel tips. For heavy red rust, I used very fine steel wool (#000?) to remove the rust.

In either situation, red rust would reappear after a period of time because the chrome plating has been compromised allowing the steel substrate to continue to rust.

Hey mobile1, here is a piece of 22 gauge metal I was practicing on. I used Hot Rims and a terry cloth. I used some 0000 steel wool to clean out the pits.

I did some wheels that were heavily pitted. All I used was hot rims and a terry cloth.

Are you saying hot rims is more effective them NXT Metal Polish?

From what I've found, Hot Rims is more aggressive. NXT finishes out smoother.

If I had to pick 1 product to use it would be NXT because of the smoother end result. You just might have to work a little harder to remove all the rust etc. If you can afford 2 products get them both. Start with Hot Rims, finish with NXT.

Another option would be to get NXT and some 0000 steel wool.

Thanks for all the advice. I already have Hot Rims Chrome Polish, Hot Rims Mag & Aluminum Polish, and steel wool. I will try these on the detail I have scheduled for Fri. 7/30. I don't have any NXT Metal Polish, so I'll work with what I have and let you all know the outcome.
