Besides speed, is there any other added benefit for applying and removing wax with an orbital buffer rather than by hand? Also, will a cleaner wax or ultimate compound do its job with just an ordinary buffer (not a da)?

Re: Yet another question from me.
Not another one....
1. As for benefits to waxing, you can usually stay thinner easier with your coats of wax. And it might just be me, but I think the shine is even better when removed with a buffer and MF bonnet.
2. As far as products working with cheaper buffers.... maybe. There are lots of variable there.
The mild cleaner/waxes or mild cleaners will be fine. The cheaper buffers tend to just spread products around, without the ability to work them in as much. Which is all those products really need anyway.
But to remove defects, products need worked in to some extent. A cheap buffer wont have the ability to do that much, and depending on how easy the paint is to work on, you may not get very far.
The other variable is with products. The older DAT products (#80, #83, etc) needed worked in and broken down to do their job and leave a nice finish. Some cheap buffers wouldn't even really break the product down enough to leave a nice finish, never mind fix any defects.
The newer SMAT products (SwirlX, UC, etc) don't break down, they just get worked around. So at least you should always have a nice surface left behind, with or without much defect removal. People have been reporting good results with the SMAT products and cheaper buffers. Maybe not show car results, but good improvements on beat up paint jobs.
Hope that helps explain a little of what is going on.2017 Subaru WRX Premium - WR Blue
