  • Difference between series of pads

What's the difference between say a W8207 and a W8006. Aside from the obvious which is one's ~7" in diameter and one is ~6". They both appear to be made of the same yellow foam. I typically buy the 8207 and 9207 (yellow and black) pads but all my local autobody supply places only stock the 8XXX and 9XXX series.

Depending what kind of machine you are using, a bigger pad will have more weight (esp when saturated with product) and make it harder for the machine to do its work and remove swirls, etc.

Bur you dont want too small for the backing plate, to where your plate could press down an edge and hit the paint.

right, I was just wondering if there's any specific difference in the foam itself. Is Meg's consistent with their colors, or does a change in series change the foam. So is the foam on a 8006 the same foam as on a 8207 (and the difference between them just size/shape) or does the change from a 80xx pad to a 82xx pad also change the cutting/polishing action of the foam

The WX207 pads are self centering, and designed to be machine washable.
I believe the foam composition may be a tad denser, but I'm not sure.

Re: Difference between series of pads

Aside from the obvious difference in size and the fact that the hook & loop material is laminated to the back of the 2.0 pads instead of just glued (which is why the 2.0 pads can be machine washed and dried and the earlier ones not) the following differences also exist:

Cutting pads (W7000/W7006 vs W7207): the foam is of a different construction on the W7207 that allows for a longer lifespan and therefore more consistent cut throughout the life of the pad

Polishing pads (W8000/W8006 vs W8207): no change whatsoever to foam construction

Finishing pads (W9000/W9006 vs W9207): aside from the color change from tan to black, the 9207 is a softer foam that addresses a sometime skip issue when used with the rotary buffer. This was not a common issue with the rotary (no issue at all with a D/A) but when it did exist it was noticeable. The new black pad resolves this.

                BUFFING PADS 101

                Cutting Pads

100% Woven Wool - very aggressive
50%/50% Woven Wool & Syntheic - not as aggessive, but more than foam
                Yellow Foam
                Green Foam
                Black Foam

(color is not the critical factor in foam but for the most part every mfg's yellow foam pad is the most aggressive and the green less aggressive and in some cases the black the least aggressive, but best to try and find which works for your objectives)

                Polishing Pads

                100% Sheepskin Pads
                Synthetic Sheepskin Pads
                White Foam

The most common used today is the white foam to elminate swirls and polish the finish to a high shine.

For wax or sealant application you do not been to buff it on. Apply with orbital or by hand or even spray on.

                Hope that helps
