    What Rotary buffer to get?

    I'm planning on purchasing a rotary buffer but not quite sure which to choose from. I'm leaning towards the makita because I like the idea of the "D" handle (looks more comfortable), but on the other hand I see more people with the dewalt. Which do you suggest I get? Why? I don't have experience w/ a rotary what so ever. I'm gonna practice on a few things i have around the house and I have watched many many videos on this. I would really like to learn how to use one incase I encounter a job where a rotary buffer is needed. So please lemme know what you guys think. Thank you

    I use the Makita. Mine came with both handle types. I use the "D" handle.

      A lot of people prefer the Makita 9227c rotary but I would seriously consider the Flex 3403 light weight rotary polisher.

        Do you have any full service tool dealers near you that would have both tools on the shelf out of packaging that you could handle and get a feel for before buying? Comparing physical features on different tools side by side is nice when trying to make a decision.

          +1 for the Flex 3403 as a first time rotary (I use both the Flex and a Makita 9227 rotary's)

            I have the Makita 9227 as well. It's a very well made buffer and balanced too. It's a variable speed design with a dial that allows the user to target the exact speed he needs and the easy to read chart on the handle makes this simple.

            The Makita 9227 has the lowest speed setting of any that I'm aware of and goes down to 600rpm. Another feature I like is the soft-start. When you press the trigger the pad builds up to the speed setting and doesn't throw product all over the place.

            I use this for my paint correction steps and then switch to my Flex 3401 for polishing.

              I just got a Makita 9227c and I am getting ready to use it soon. I have used my Bro's and he got me one for my B Day, it has both handles but I also prefer the "D" or I call it the Hoop Handle.

              You can do Paint Correction, Polishing, and Swirl removal just need to have the correct Pad/Chemical combo and proper technique. IF small spaces is an issue get a 4" backing plate.

                Just out of curiosity, why do some of you guys prefer the D Handle as opposed to the Side Handle?

                I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.
                I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                Remove swirls my friends.

                    The D-Handle ergonomically places your hands pressure where it's needed, directly over the pad. This position naturally keeps the pad more parallel or flatter against the surface hence more efficient use of both pad and product.

                      You also won't angle the buffer to the point of the D handle hitting the car. This is a very real possibility with a side handle.

                        I use my Left hand on the Hoop and Right on the trigger. I twist my Right hand ever so slightly like cracking a throttle and it it allows the pad to not sit fully flat on the surface. The left hand drives the buffer left to right in a sweeping motion and I draw the buff towards mr as I work the panel.

                          Thanks for all of the replies so far. I agree that the "D" handle is place in a better place than the stick handle. I feel that when i buff w/ my PC using the stick handle i put a little more force on the stick causing it to not buff evenly. So now when i use the PC I just put my hand over the top of the pad. As far as getting the Flex 3403 I would like to see one in person before ordering online. I'll have to find a local distributor in my area. I believe I can go to home depot and check out the Makita and Dewalt side by side or something similar to both products to get an idea of how each would feel while holding. Thanks again for all the pros/cons of each so far. Please keep them coming cause I plan on buying one in about 2 weeks when i get paid again

                          P.S. I'll look up a spot to go check out the Flex 3403 before I make my final decision.
