  • Microfiber towels and swirls

How do i know i when i should use swirl x or ultimate compound. My wife's white 08 eclipse has swrils or "webs" all over the can only be seen when the sun is right on it. Also, are all microfiber towels safe to use on cars? I buy the packs that come from wal-mart, they run about 5 bucks. I ask because once i remove these swirls i dont want to make more.
Am i obsessed?? A car is the second biggest financial investment for most people, why not keep it looking better than new?

To determine whether to use Swirl X or Ultimate Compound, it really depends on exactly the condition of your paint (pics might help...); I would use Swirl X if your paint has mostly Swirl or some light scratches and use Ultimate Compound if you have some deep contaminant/dust or some medium size scratches inside your paint.

I just recently first tried Ultimate Compound on my 4Runner; and the result is FANTASTIC.

There's only one way to find out: Do a TEST SPOT. Start with the least abrasive product, in this case, SwirlX. If SwirlX removes your swirls, you're good to go; if not, then try Ultimate Compound. I strongly recommend that you use a foam applicator.

How to do a Test Spot

Polishing an entire car by hand is hard and time-consuming work. If you're serious about this, you might consider investing in a DA polisher and pads.

No, all microfiber towels are not safe for all paint systems. I know this from experience. As a result of a bad experience with towels I bought from Advanced Auto, I only allow higher quality towels to touch my paint. I have no experience with the towels from WalMart. Some folks recommend rubbing the towel on a CD: if it scratches the CD, then it's not safe for the car. YMMV.

Ok thanks a lot. I'll look around for some "premium" towels. I have an orbital buffer but it does not have a foam applicator and i had to go to a few stores before i could find a foam applicator. I will post pictures when im done. May be a few days.

Why don't you give the towels you currently have a shot. I've been using the towels that come in a bag from Wally World for the past 3-4 years, and they perform flawlessly.

            1. Test spot.
            2. try to get some premium microfibers. You will be glad in the long run.
