  • The Absorber, How to

I though I would give the absorber a try today. I could use some help because I definitely think I did something wrong. I rinsed it out before use and gave it a light squeeze to remove the majority of the water. Then I went to use it like a chamois and it just stayed in place when I went to pull it across the car, almost like it was glued. What am I going wrong? How do you use the absorber to get it to work well, it there a trick?

    Hi Joe,

I've used the Absorber since around 1988 and can show you how I use it if you like. Tomorrow I'll wash the Blazer and then take a few pictures as this will be easier than typing.

The trick to using the Absorber is to use it like a squeegee and drag the water to the edge of the surface, i.e. from the back to the front of the hood. I always sort of wadded up the Absorber or folded it and lifted one edge in my hand and used the other half to wipe the surface. Laying it out flat and allowing the entire towel to make contact with the surface makes it harder to drag. I hope that makes since

I have a couple of them too and never really liked the way they worked, it would be great to see what tips you have. I now only use them on non-painted surfaces, I am always afraid I am adding scratches to the surface.

            Hi Joe,

I didn't get to the Absorber today as I was busy testing some other products. I should be able to do it tomorrow however...

I have an Absorber. I like to fold it up two times. I drag it across the surface of the paint and knock off any debris that may have fallen on the paint shortly after washing it. Have to rinse it out often but it works great. My experience is, after wiping it will leave some almost non-existant water spots which quickly disappear.

When I went out to wash the car...

There was no one around to take the pictures

I'll see what I can do... I have a clinic this weekend for the ProwlerOnline club and I can probably snag some photos then.

I have used absorbers for better than 15 years. A good buddy (GRHS) of mine bought me one and now I would never go back to a chamios. They do a very good job although they can take a little getting use to.

Unlike a real leather chamois, the Absorber doesn't make a good squeege. A chamois will glide over the surface, but TA will stick & stutter across the surface as you've discovered.

I usually hold it in the middle and kind of fold it in half. Then I drag the end I have in my fingers from the cowl to the leading edge on the hood, letting the loose part drag along behind. For the roof, I reach out as far as I can and use the same method.

When the majority of the water is off, I wring TA out and loosely 'wad' it up and lightly (no pressure) draw the folds along the body panel. The Absorber is more like a sponge than a chamois, if you put pressure on it while you're trying to dry the car, you will force the absorbed water out and back onto the car.

It WILL pick up a lot of water, but I find it best to wring it out frequently.

For the vertical panels, I just hold the Absorber close to the panel at the top and use my other hand to lightly push TA against the panel, just enough to make contact.

I love the thing, it just took a while for me to find out the right way to use it (pre-internet of course)

I use the absorber occasionally on one of my cars. I also folded it in half and just let about half it pull along the surface to minimize drag. But on my 'baby' I swear by the leafblower. If you keep your car waxed...you can blow dry the car in about the same time it takes to dry it with a towel/absorber and you don't have to worry about scratches.

If I used a leafblower on my car, I think my neighbors would indeed think I've lost it!
