  • "Claying"Questions from a Newbie . . .

    Hi All:

    I took delivery of a new Infiniti G37X Coupe in "Slate Blue" (color code K52) on 7/2/10.

    I have watched the video on Claying & I have a few questions:
    ------------
    #1-> Is it a good idea to Clay a new car finish?
    #2-> Any downside to Claying??
    #3-> The car is going in Monday to have a 3M Clear Plastic Bra installed-> should I Clay the surface before the Bra installation- or does it make any difference???
    #4-> I am considering the Dealer applied Xzilon Sealant package @$400 with a 5 yr guaranty - BUT - I may save the money & seal the paint myself. Does anyone have any experience with Xzilon????
    #5-> Is there anything I need to watch out for while Claying?????

    Please let me know if there is anything else I may need to know that I have not asked about.

    1. Yes, absolutely.

    2. Nope.

    3. Is always good to have as perfect a surface as possible. Even if you are short on time, and just do that area first.

    4. No, but doubt it is worth it.

    5. Not really. Dont drop the clay, break the bar in half. I worked over some paper/cardboard at first incase I did drop it. Might want an extra bottle of lube.

      #1-> Yes.

      #2-> Used with a good technique, none that I know of.

      #3-> Sure, why not.

      #4-> Save your money.

      #5-> Use a fine grade clay and you'll be alright. Use plenty of lube with it, and press down firmly while gliding the clay across the finish, but not so firm that the clay sticks to it. Don't drop the soap...I mean clay

      The are several products like this out there (Xzilon). Some claim it works, and some claim it's a scam. I have never used it, but have heard about these products.

      The dealers cost for it is very low, and if it is applied "in - house", then the person(s) that will be working on your car will be nothing but $10 per hour employee's.

      These products claim that you don't have to wax, or polish for 3 years, but, nothing in terms of a polymer/wax sealer, is going to prevent scratches.

      It *may* help in terms of marring as a slicker surface will help in the washing and drying process but nothing short of a plastic film will protect your clear coat from scratching. It lasts 3 years ONLY if you apply a booster type product. At best it will last a year if properly washed and dried.

      People who have had this type of product put on are placed in a false sense of security about their cars upkeep.

      I wouldn't put this stuff on my car, and I surely wouldn't let anyone else put it on either.

        The only thing I would add is this. Stay away from the aggressive red clay. Use only the smooth surface kit, or the mild (blue) clay from the mirroe glaze line.

        Also use plenty of lubricant.
        quality creates its own demand

          Thanx to you all for your replies-

          I have another question:

          #1-> Is it OK to Clay the painted Rubber Bumper & other Rubber front parts of the car (this applies to most of the area that the 3M Clear Plastic Bra will over)?

          Thanx again for all the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

            You can clay anything solid. Clay your glass also.

            But dont clay your wheels until you are ready to throw out the clay. Dont want to bring that back up onto the paint.
