  • Paint cleaning questions

This past weekend I gave my truck a detail job. The paint is somewhat neglected. One of the things that bothered me most was the bad water spotting, bug etching, light swirls, and some "ghosting" from where I had shaved off the emblems using fishing line and a eraser wheel. I tackled the ghosting spots by taping them off and using both the old ScratchX and UC by hand and a foam pad. After removing the tape and pulling the truck back into the sunlight I noticed the ghosting was gone but the whole area was dull. I was under the impression that UC did not need to be followed up with another less agressive abrasive? After some reading on here I when out and bought SwirlX and applied it to the whole finish using a Orbital buffer and a terry cloth pad then followed by NXT2.0wax. I was pretty happy about the results but I think I only got about 70% correction. Eventually I'll be buying the PC DA but funds do not allow right now.

    Re: Paint cleaning questions

Did you have any particular questions?

It isn't suggested to use SwirlX with an orbital buffer, rather try it by either by DA or hand to get better results. To add, the terry cloth pad probably isn't going to leave you with the best finish, as it is fairly aggressive and can leave behind some hazing or micromarring.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

I believe that UC CAN be LSP ready, but depends on vehicle to vehicle. I've been fortunate enough that this is the cause, however there are situations where you will have to follow up with something less agressive (which sounds like your case). I think the previous post is correct that a terry cloth is pretty agressive and I think a foam pad and the swirlX will give you the results you're looking for. Good luck.
