  • Paint Help

hey guys, so i just got a new car from my dad. It does have some damage to the paint. I wanted to get any advice possible on how to go about repairing these problems before I go through the detailing process. Thanks a lot.

Ouch....looks like the bumper needs a repaint, the scratch needs to be compounded and polished out, and the bad touch up paint could probably be redone and polished to blend. A Pro Detailer could do all of that.

      Re: Paint Help

It depends on what your budget is and what your expectations are.

The bumper needs to be repainted. The black is raw plastic. Are you considering a DIY repair or professional repaint?

The scratch looks like it would come out with Ultimate Compound and a foam applicator. Can you feel it with your fingernail?

The stains could be nasty and they may never come out. That section may require a repaint. I would try a test section with the Ultimate Compound and foam applicator.

Basically, I would spend $10 and do some test sections, post your results and then go from there.

      I hope that helps.

bill, i am considering diy, but obviously if the job becomes too complicated i will get someone else to do it. i cant really feel the scratch with my fingernail so i am going to guess that the scratch will come out.

what is the diy approach to repainting that section of the bumper? no real budget i can afford to get it done professionally, but i would like to learn how to do these kinds of things.

Take a look at this thread regarding DIY paint job.

          Here is another

Personally I'd highly consider getting the bumper repainted professionally, being that it is a darker color. The paint overall looks to be in fairly decent shape.

You should be fine with the scratch and some Ultimate Compound. You may even be able to remove/reduce the scratch with something less aggressive. Do you plan on getting a Dual Action Polisher?

bill those links are great! they really are very informative. the process actually seems do-able, but like you said i will most likely get the bumper done professionally, it just ***** b/c it wasnt my dads fault somebody scraped his car in the parking lot by his office

as for the hood, what do you recommend?? there are a lot of those paint chip spots, do you think i could use touch up paint or should i get those sections repainted as well??

              Re: Paint Help

If you have a very limited budget I would use the UC on the scratch and just get some touch up paint from the dealer and touch up the bumper till you can afford to have it repaired correctly. The chips on the hood were touched up very badly. The paint is all over the chip and not in the chip.
