They do provide protection; at least as far as I know.

Yes, most will provide UV Protection, Protect Against Drying out (Such as cracking), etc. The problem is that most dressings, especially water based ones like Hyper Dressing do not last very long. The main purpose for a dressing is for appearance. If you are looking for protection, where it is mainly necessary, like Plastic Trim or Engine Components, than I recommend Meguiar's new Ultimate Protectant or Gold Class Trim Detailer.

For interiors on the other hand, products like Supreme Shine Protectant will last a long time and will provide outstanding UV Protection and it has Scotch Guard which protects surfaces from water staining and other damage. Utlimate Protectant is also great for most interior surfaces as well.

Thanks for the info guys! I'm using the ultimate protectant for the interior and its been working very well. How long do these dressings typically last? Is there something that is more durable for the automotive nether regions?

Ultimate Protectant is a water-based dressing designed to resist running. It will not run when water hits it; at least at first. It should survive a couple weeks permitting that it is not raining every day or every other day. In these circumstances even a solvent based dressing may start to run. On the interior, it will last you at least several weeks, probably closer to a month and a half or two. I have had Natural Shine Protectant on my interior for about a month now and it is starting to fade a little.

I am a little confused at what you mean by "automotive nether regions." Do you just mean other areas of the car? If that is the case then it is outstanding for trim pieces and will do wonders to bring back faded trim. Be mindful that you do have to work it in a bit though. This will allow the protectant to bond correctly to the plastic and give you that outstanding protection. Something more durable will likely be All Season Dressing as it is a solvent-based dressing, not water-based as Ultimate Protectant is.

Thanks. I use the UP for trim and exterior rubber but am looking for something for wheel wells and underbody areas (at least those I can reach). Sounds like all season maybe what I need (?). Do you apply with a sprayer?

I've been very happy with M40 (Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner) for underhood & wheel wells. Can be easily sprayed onto hard to reach areas and leaves a lower gloss finish than UP.

Have you used Ultimate Protectant on an interior? It sure lasts longer than a few weeks to a month.

I applied Ultimate Protectant to the interior of my truck back in October of 2009 and it is still going pretty strong, it has only been wiped down with a damp mf and some QID two or three times since that time.

Have you ever used All Season Dressing? UP and ASD come pretty close in terms of durability. I have tested out many dressings over the course of time on many different vehicles.

                  Re: do dressings provide protection?

I have not tried the ASD yet but I use the UP on the interior and exterior trim and have been happy with it. I think it is too thick to apply the wheel wells (???). I have never even washed the wheel wells before aside from spraying with water. Another thread gave me the idea to clean and protect so I was going to clean with a soft toliet brush but then wanted something durable to protect.

Go ahead and spray some M40 or Hyperdressing into the wells. You can use ASD if you want as well.

I have used both. I have not used UP on an interior but I have on the exterior. I have also used ASD on the exterior. I thought that ASD had a little more longevity than UP. I have to try UP on the interior some time. Sorry joaks.
