  • Repairing eyeglasses with Megs

So I just noticed a nice scratch in my (Scratch resistant) lenses. Do you guys think I can use some M205 or scratch X on a foam applicator to buff this out? I would love to know your thoughts.

If your scratch resistant lenses are like mine the scratch resistance comes from a coating on the lens. Using an abrasive would likely damage that coating and actually make it worse. It would also do damage to any other type of coating on the lens, i.e. anti-reflectinon, tint, etc. Why not take it back to the place of purchase and ask them to repair/replace that lens. I find that even the slightest marring on my glasses to be a major annoyance. My eyes seem to immediately dwell on any spot or scratch.

If you use a compound on the lens you'll quickly discover the only thing you'll accomplish if making the situation much worse....

Trust me on this one, I've learned through experience....

Yeah sunglasses have a protective coating on them. By taking any polish or compound to them, it will start to remove that coating. DO NOT DO IT

No no, ignore those above, go ahead! And when you mess the lenses up I can recommend a great optician in New Jersey to help you out. He'll then send the order to our laboratory and we'll all help America get back on it's economic feet!

J/K, don't do it. All lenses that are scratch resistant (except glass) are that way from a coating. Anything applied to that coating in terms of an abrasive will make things worse. All lenses except for glass and uncoated CR39 plastic, come with a factory applied front surface scratch coating. After surfacing the lens in the laboratory we apply a back side scratch coating as well. We can also apply premium scratch coatings with nanocomposite, oleophobic and hydrophobic properties in them.
Trust me on this, I'm a Master Optician with 25+ years in one of the largest optical laboratories in the US.

NXT is great on everything. The only problem is, the next time you clean it with a serious cleaner, it will be removed in the process. Nothing like a glossy, reflective, water (urine) sheeting toilet!

Thanks Guys....I was going to pull the trigger there....but thought I should ask the experts. I might just replace the lens. So much for Scratch resistant....I don't even know what I did. Waxing the toilet????? I'll pass!

My father in law paints cars. He has a cheap pair of glasses that he uses for when he is spraying paint. They get covered with over spray. At the end of the day he uses Meguiars cleaner wax to remove the over spray. They clean up perfect every time.

Warning, these are his glasses that he ONLY uses for spraying paint.
