  • #83 & 80 vs DC

Last weekend I did the PC with #83, #80 & 2 coats of NXT for the first time. Now I'm reading that Deep Crystal give a deeper glossier shine to dark colored cars. Mine is Black.

So which is better, which should I use or should I alternate?

    TIA
Give me a dirty martini and a great cigar, cause nothing beats a nice tight white ash!

Deep Crystal Carnauba Wax is a pure wax that does create a deep, dark reflective finish just like many of our other waxes such as Gold Class and #26 Hi-Tech Yellow wax. Here's a shot of one coat of Deep Crystal Carnauba Wax applied to our black Honda Pilot right after washing.

The only way you'll know which wax looks best in your eyes on your car's finish is to experiment. Topping is a popular thing car crazy enthusiasts like to do in an effort to create the ultimate shine. Here's the link to an article on topping and how to do it the right way to make sure you like the results.

Besides Deep Crystal Carnauba Wax, you might consider the newly reformulated Gold Class Clear Coat Car Wax

Gold Class has always been famous for creating deep, dark reflections on dark colors.

IMHO, the Deep Crystal does not compare to the NXT. DC is very good but NXT is at a different level. The only sealant or wax that comes close to NXT is Medallion Premium Paint Protection, but NXT is even better than it too, especially on black!

As far as polishes go, DC2 is good but #81 and #80 are both better. If you need cleaning or swirl removal go with #80, if not go straight to #81. On black you may even want to use #81 after #80 and before NXT. #83 is used when #80 won't remove the swirls.

Great Mike, Thanks. I think I'll run to the store tonite and grab whatever I can. Is there any order I should try? What I mean is, which product should I try first on top of the NXT:

It really doesn't matter, what's more important is that you start with the same base, then apply each the the products side by side. Mark out in your minds eye, 4 areas and leave one area with just the NXT as a control. Then follow the below,

          Topping NXT

There is always a lot of talk about topping NXT with other products, because this is a popular topic, I thought I would offer this simple suggestion.

If you think you would like to apply a topper over NXT, before you apply your choice of a topper over the entire finish, first do a side-by-side comparison and inspect your results carefully to insure that the test area does in fact look better than NXT by itself before applying your choice of topper to the entire finish. If you apply your choice of a topper to the entire car without comparing, you will never know if it improved or diminished the results created by the NXT alone.

Here's how to do a test spot,

First - Wait until you have two thin, uniform applications of NXT Tech Wax over the entire finish. Two thin applications always look better than one application.

Second - Find a nice flat panel like the hood or deck lid so that you can look down on the finish while standing over it. Apply your choice of a topper to a square section about one foot square being careful to do so in a way as to have a very distinct section with only the topper in this section. Allow the topper to dry according to the instruction and the remove with a microfiber polishing cloth or a clean, soft 100% cotton terry cloth towel. To be fair, you should apply a second coat in this same section to insure a uniform application. Again, apply and remove according to the product's directions.

After you applied and removed your choice of a topper carefully, inspect the two areas under different lighting conditions. Different lighting conditions will allow your eyes to see the different dimensions of your finish, such as richness, gloss, shine and clearness or clarity. View the two areas from different angles, from directly overhead, and with a light source centered in the area, like the sun. You may also want to have some friends compare the two areas also, a second set of fresh eyes may see something you miss, especially after you've been working on the finish and staring at the paint for hours.

If after doing this side-by-side comparison test in one small area, your eyes will tell you whether or not you want to continue with applying the topper to the entire finish.

          Hope this helps...

I did the 83/80 combo and loved it, now I'm just looking for depth and the wet glossy look.

              I totally agree with RamAirV1,

I hate to say this, but NXT is by far the best in the looks department in the Megs line of waxes and sealants. It's the most "balanced" topper combining all of the Megs toppers in terms of looks. For me the only wax closed to NXT is GC on black. (I haven't tried MPPC)

And also to share my recent conclusion based on my experiment, NXT's looks will only be on its peak after it has fully cured. I noticed this because while I apply NXT in the morning, I'm not that satisfied with the looks (for the price). The following morning, I was surprised and amazed how it changed the color of my silver metallic CR-V.

And as Mike said, before topping NXT, try side by side comparo first. Sometimes the human eye could fool us.

              That's just me!
I wash and wash my car until the whole thing disappeared!
