  • Help me with detailing a boat exterior on water in sun in 2? days

    Hello,

I need to detail the exterior of a 40' boat, here is a pic of what I will be working on.

the hull was already polished & waxed about 4 months ago. The white top half hasn't been polished in over a year, and is looking pretty dull. there are also many water spots in the glass.

these are the materials I have to work with right now.

    porter cable 7424 DA polisher,
eastwood glass polishing set ( rhodite & buffwheel)
    * not pictured collinite metal polish
1 wool, 1 cutting (yellow) and 1 finishing(black) lake country pad
1 clay bar w/ bottle of quick detailer
    Meguiars Ultimate compound
    3M Super duty rubbing compound
    meguiars #45 Marine polish
    collinite 885 fleetwax

I've waited a few days for cloudcover and it finally looks like today and tomorrow will be clouty %40 chance of rain, but normally rain dont happen here until its 75% or so. It's about 90 degrees and a little humid especially since I am right on the water. with a slight breeze.

I need to get this finished by tomorrow night.

Im thinking: clay bar >> 3m rubbing compound >> #45 polish >> collinite 885 fleetwax

I could use some tips (especially for working in these conditions), it's my first time detailing a boat, how should I proceed?

I have a west marine store nearby that I could run to if I need something else.

    thanks

You'll probably find the use of a maroon W7xxx series pad to be a good friend in this project. Gel coat is a lot harder and thicker than automotive paint and usually responds quite well to this pad. Whether or not that 3M compound will do the trick is a bit of an unknown - if you find it's not getting the results you want then run down to the West Marine and pick up some Meguair's M67 One Step Compound.

Otherwise, do everything basically the same way you do it when working on paint - same speeds, pressure, work area size, etc.

Also, read through this thread for a write up on detailing a boat using these products and tools.

Thanks for the reply and link. Nice job on that recovery, the red area is really noticeable on the difference the work made..

Im going to run to west marine before I start and pick up a few things, I'll grab a bottle of M67, and see if they have any 6 or 6.5" pads for my DA. I didn't notice pads there last time I went, but I'll ask this time, I really need some more variety.

I'm thinking I might have to work in smaller sections due to working in the sun, heat & humidity.
