Re: help i think i crack my customer clearcoat

What car are you working on? Can you post a picture just to be sure?

Paint crack can be caused by various things, from the breakdown of the finish by long periods of sunlight exposure, extreme temperature change or moisture to even by the paint ingredients not being stir or agitated correctly.

We really need pictures of this to properly diagnose the problem.

As already mentioned, pics help. Did the damage occur on metal, or plastic (bumper cover, door mirror housing, spoiler?). What was the speed you had the polisher set to?

I really don't think it's anything you did unless you were really aggressive with the pressure you put on the polisher. From what you are describing, it's possible that your polishing simply uncovered an existing defect, like crow's feet.

That's a pretty mild combination (W8006/SwirlX/DA) so you should have been really safe. Now, did you by any chance use a lot of pressure and really dwell in that one spot for a long period of time? Did you notice the paint getting really hot in that spot? Was there a particularly nasty defect right there that you were struggling to remove?

If none of the above describe your situation, it may well be that the defect was there before you started work but you couldn't see it, or just didn't notice it. It could be an etching from a bird dropping or something similar.

While a D/A is not 100% totally and completely safe under any and all conditions, from what you describe it should not have caused this particular problem and most likely did not.

A rotary is a far more likely culprit to inflict damage to the paint and trim, but even in the middle of a panel you have to do something pretty silly to really get into trouble. If you're skilled with a rotary then a D/A should be pretty much fool proof.

If you're going to be speaking with your customer again soon it would be great if you can snap a picture at that time. We'd all love to see where this is exactly, and just what it looks like.

Darn birds. When is Meguiar's going to develop a bolt on after market Mini Surface to Air Missile (S.A.M.) apparatus I can attach to my car? Little missiles would be cool, they don't have to kill, but rather stun them into compliance. Birds are the worst, they don't respect the restricted air space over my car. Damn birds.
