Re: I disagree with the Meguiar's Video! <gasp>
You should see the trail of your wash mitt leaving behind suds which should be a good enough indicator to let you know where you have already gone over.
I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.
I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.

Re: I disagree with the Meguiar's Video! <gasp>
I guess I'm going to have to make a video to prove my point. When I see cars get washed from the top down I go around the car after it dries and usually can count at least a dozen missed spots. I will show on the video coming soon.
Im not too worried about moving dirty suds up to cleaner areas because it all gets powerwashed off anyway from the top down when rinsing.
The entire car gets powerwashed before we take a wash mitt to it anyway so there
is no sand/mud in any excess by the time we are at the washing stage. Your mitt is needed to agitate the ground in dirt that cannot be dislodged by a powerwasher alone.
One small area missed, because you cannot tell exactly where you agitated shows up like a shining beacon after the car dries, usually resulting in having to go around the car with final inspection or quick detailer to wipe them all up.
Washing from the bottom up, these areas dont get missed

I don't doubt that

Originally posted by BluelineI own a silver vehicle and a black vehicle owns me. The black one demands attention, washing, detailing, waxing and an occasional dinner out at a nice restaurant. The silver one demands nothing and it looks just fine. I think the black vehicle is taking advantage of me, and the silver car is more my style. We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

If I can get power washer with enough pressure and car wash soap with enough cleaning power, can I skip the wash mitten step altogether? The soap will be applied via the pressure washer.
My experience is that once I touch the car with the wash mitten, I lose the wax :-(

Wow.
Ok, again, as stated earlier, Top to Bottom for the mentioned reasons.
If you are missing a dozen spots while washing, chances are it is your technique, not from where you start. What are you using to wash the car with? Brush, mitt, neighbors cat?

You say you are stripping the wax when you use a mitt..... What mitt are you using? What wash soap are you using? And what LSP do you have on the vehicle?

I can't wait to see this video of your washing technique. If you're missing spots while washing from the top down, you must have some crazy and sporadic technique.
It shouldn't be the dirty suds you're concerned with, but rather the grit from the lower panels being rubbed across the paint of the upper surfaces of the car - the most visible surfaces to people. These are the surfaces in which swirl marks will most likely be seen by the general public. Grit doesn't have to be chunks of mud to be abrasive.
When you're polishing a car, do you go over it randomly? Or do you make back and forth, side to side movements with the polisher? The same should be done with the wash mitt or brush. Not sure how you can be missing spots washing from the top down.
ColinA common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Please tell me your not washing the wheels, tires, and wells and then using that same soap solution on the paint.Nick

No disrespect intended, but I would say if you're missing so many spots then there's a problem with your technique that needs to be adjusted in order to get the most out of your wash. I always wash from the top down and I have never had the problem you seem to be having. Would like to see your video though.Shane

Re: I disagree with the Meguiar's Video! <gasp>
For me the most important factor when washing my car is to keep the wash media as clean as possible. Even with the 2BM and grit guards, the water media does get progressively more contaminated, to the extent that if my car is really dirty I would change the water in the rinse bucket during the process.
Working from the bottom up means that the wash media gets contaminated quicker as you are hitting the dirtiest part of the car first. In my mind, dirtier wash media = greater possibility of inflicting paint damage as you move to the upper parts of the car.
On as lighter note - it may just be that you don't appreciate the gravity of the situation

What is your procedure when you wash? Do you just take your wash mitt and go in no particular pattern, but just moving it around in different areas of the car or panel? If you go left to right, or up and down, completely accros a panel and and continue that motion until you have covered the whole panel, there shouldn't be any missed spots.
Every single person on this post so far hasn't had this problem of missed spots you are talking about, so maybe its your technique of washing?
