  • surface felt rough after GC wax

I got a big problem, can someone give me some guide as to where the cause of the problem is and how to fix it?

As I am new to this car detailing stuff, I had studied this forums for a few days before I started this work in smaller sections at a time in my garage.........I had my brand new 3 week old Sabura washed by NXT Wash and then chamios dried. I run my fingers on the paint surface, and felt tiny dust on the paint. Plus there were a few yellowish stain left by lady bird poo, etc.. Following Mike's and local Meguiars advice, I used PC Paint Cleaner for tiny dust and ScatchX on yellowish stuff. I used microfibre to buff off. The paint surface was then in the top shape ready for polish and waxing. I could hardly felt any dirt on the paint surface i.e. smooth.

On the roof section, I tried polishing using DC Polish and then waxing using GC Liquid Wax. I applied the wax a few minutes after I buff off the polish.

And on the rear, I did waxing using GCLW straight after DCPC. I applied the wax a few minutes after I buff off the PC.

I let the wax cured overnight.

I then buff off the wax with microfibre. Compare the shine on these two sections, no visually noticeable difference in term of shine and evenness of the surface. It shine like a new car and like sections that has not being polish or wax i.e. front and side.

I then run my fingers on both surfaces, to my utter dismay, I could felt tiny irregularity all over the paint surface both on the roof and rear!

Can someone tell me what had I done wrong here or there is something wrong with my bottle of GCLW since it is one of the only two common denominators here. The applicator pad is another.

I checked that the GCLW was sealed when I opened it, but I did noticed the GC Wash that came with GCLW in the gift pack was spilling wash liquid all over the pack onto the applicator.

I am ceasing all my work on the waxing until I know what is going on. In the mean time, I am going to try to duplicate the same on another section to see if I can find the source of the problem. Will use new applicator but same wax.

Kind of disaster all round at the moment. I had another car washed and dried, within minutes I got this big bird poo splash all over the windscreen!

Let's hope everyone has happy new year...and to those tsunami survivals as well.

Have you tried any clay yet? Something llike Meguiars Quik Clay System will remove bonded contaminates.

Meguiar’s Quik Clay Detailing System safely restores a smooth-as-glass feel to your paint by removing bonded contaminants from the surface. The clay bar safely traps and lifts-off contaminants as you lubricate the surface with Quik Detailer (included).

Even on a brand new car there still is some bonded contaminates. As I found with my truck a year ago when I bought it.

I am sure others will reply and give other suggestions.

You may have had rail dust on your car and you didn't notice it right away. It happened to me on my last 4 cars! When the new car detailers got the cars ready they washed and put some kind of wax on them and I did not notice it right away. I am grateful though that they didn't take a rotary and scour the paint.

Regardless, whether it's rail dust or not, it sounds like you definitely have some above surface contaminants on your paint. The best remedy for that is clay. If you can't find the Meguiar's Quick Clay or Overspray Clay locally, just get some Clay Magic at the auto parts store and it will get the job done. The bad news is that you will have to rewax the car. But that's happened to most of us here so we are used to it.

          Try this,

Assuming your car is still clean and in the garage.

Wash and dry your hand and then feel the flat/horizontal surface of an area you have not waxes yet. Test to make sure it feels as smooth as glass. If it doesn't then clay this area. Then feel it again.

You must make sure the surface is smooth as glass before you begin to apply any other products. If it's not, and claying isn't fixing it, then it's highly unlikely that a paint cleaner, polish or wax is going to help as something is wrong with the paint.

If you can get this test area smooth as glass, then apply the paint cleaner, then remove. Next, apply the Gold Class Wax. apply a thin, even coat. Make sure you shake up the bottle really well first. Let it dry for 10-15 minutes and then remove it with a soft, clean microfiber polishing cloth.

Now, with your clean, dry hand, feel the surface. It should still feel as smooth as glass, even smoother and even silky.

If not, and the surface now feels as you say, "tiny irregularity all over the paint surface", and your sure it was as smooth as brand new glass when you started, then there is something wrong with the wax.

Return it or exchange it for a different bottle of wax.

            Hey,

I moved your thread to this section as I believe your questions and the corresponding answers will benefit many others.

AS for the question, I would wash and clay the car. Bonded contiminents, especially on the horizontal surfaces need to be removed.

Give the claying a try and let us know how it turns out!

Thanks for the prompt reply, Mike and co.

Yes, I did run my finger over both sections after using the paint cleaner on both. They both felt as smooth as glass (ooh, I really like that feeling!). (The car is in the garage and it is a clean work area.)
(Mike, the surface after wash was not as smooth as glass but contains bird poo yellowish color stain, a bit of road tar, etc.. I was able to remove all of them using the DC Paint Cleaner and turned the surface to as smooth as glass. Used some ScratchX on two spots only.)

It was after I had polish+wax (roof section) and then wax (rear section). That I again run the fingers over the surface but felt the irregularity everywhere.

I was quite specific about my hand been clean all the time, I also used separate microfibre and applicators for each product.

I did not clay it as the surface, after the paint cleaner, was as good as glass. (but now I definately had to at least clay those affected area if I could not get rid of those irregularity i.e. it's not dirty as I could not see anything in it...worst case I have to un-wax it.)

It definately look like I have to re-wax these two areas before I go any further.

I have not had a chance to start on another test area but I will do it late today while waiting for New Year countdown.

I will update once I have some results.

PS: 2hotford, thanks for moving the thread to this area.

When I do another test section tonight I shall try to let the wax dry and then clean off.....says about 20 mins to see how it goes.
