  • Off Season ??

Not sure where to post this ?

Having just bought my first brand new car in 20 years a 2011 Sonata ( Black ) over the weekend I did a very light clay on it, did not need a lot of work but some stuff was removed, then two coats of Gold Class +,
the finish is just amazing with the metal flake in the paint it looks 3-dimensional, my wife said it's like looking at the night sky on clear night.

My question is and i know summer is just starting but what kind of "Snow Brush" should I look for ? I want to keep my finish as pristine as possible and Chicago winters can be brutal fortunatley I have a heated Garage when I can detail my new ride.

    Thanks

    Re: Off Season ??

I try to leave a skim coat of snow when clearing the car, not all the way down to the paint.

If you wanted/needed to touch the paint, the absolute best would be finding one of the old Versa Angle Body Brushes, or maybe even Wheel Face Brushes. Some have recently popped up at Big Lots, but maybe ebay, etc as well.

Not sure what other brands are out there, but the softest car wash brush you can find would be best.

If I remember, I will take a photo of mine later and post.

What I did was take a regular snow brush and wrapped the head of it with a microfiber cloth. I then tape the end of the microfiber cloth to the handle of the snow brush. After that I installed a microfiber sock (made for snow brushes) over the top.

The main reason I first wrapped the brush in a microfiber cloth is, I didn't want any bristles to potentially poke through the sock and scratch my paint.

I hope that helps you jdeutinger. It's worked very well for me. As Murr mentioned leave a skim of snow on the vehicle. If you ever had a face wash when you were a kid, you know that snow can be is sharp.

          You are welcome John.

You could probably get away with just the microfiber cloth, but it wouldn't work as well. You can also take off the SnowPaws cover and clean it, if you ever need to.

p.s. your welcome to contribute to my rep power welcome :-) if you found the tip handy

                Re: Off Season ??

We used these a couple times last season:

Can be bought here: http://www.autogeek.net/oxo-extendable-snow-brush.html. No problems with marring that I noticed. The bristles are nice and soft as well, not stiff and scratchy like a regular snow brush is. Very nice brush for the price.

I think that'll do for this coming winter.
                  The bristles do look soft!

Agreed they do look soft and if you're careful you should be okay.

I personally find no need for the bristles. I live in a climate with snow 4+ months of the year (It just snowed here 1 week ago). I feel that you're better off not touching the paint. The brush I posted up above has the benefit of being somewhat solid. This allows you to break under the snow, get most of it off and not actually touch the paint.

You will notice too that my scraper looks like a cheap piece of wood (it is). These are the type that I prefer. I've used the fancy models with the telescopic handles and they can't handle the extreme cold. They snap very easily. The wood ones are around $2-3. You can get the microfiber sock for $5-8.
