  • Wet sanding Rock Chips on Carbon Fiber hood

About a month ago I had a good size rock hit my cf hood on the highway, luckily I had most of it covered in painters tape for protection, but it still made its way to the surface of the hood and left a good chip/scratch in it (far from being down to the carbon fiber itself). I wet sanded it down with just a few strokes of 2000 grit wet sandpaper and finished with 105/205 combo and it came out great, however just recently under certain light I can see a "low spot" or wave where I made the repair. I ordered some 3000 UniGrit and a sanding block to hopefully even it out or blend it in better as well as fix some other light road rash on the hood. Any other suggestions to smooth it out?

Just be careful, or next thin your know, you're going to make your whole hood uneven.

How far out should I go from the area I did previously to even things out?

Unfortunately sanding a small area like it seems you have can "flatten" the clear coat, be it on carbon fibre or paintwork. Basically the sanding has reduced the amount of visible orange peel, or rippled effect in the paint and you get what you are seeing. Sanding that spot again is only going to make it more visible. There isn't a "fix", the best thing to do is to clean/polish the rest of the hood with 105/205, as the cutting action in 105 may be enough to even out the appearance of the hood in general and clear up your previously mentioned "road rash". I'd personally avoid cutting the sanded area again with 105, just sort of blend up to and around it if you get me...

I feel ya. I began to think that just maybe the indentation in the hood wasn't from the sanding but the rock alone that hit that hood. I know it was good size and I am lucky it didn't go into my windshield. The 2 layers of tape may have just portected it enough to only cause the small chip. I could be wrong but just a theory. But either way I think the 3000 will be a better choice for repair from now on.

Is the "low spot" in the clear coat or in the hood itself? I was thinking it was as a result of the initial sanding you did and more of a visual thing as opposed to a panel problem??
