  • "Detailing" an oxymoron

Is it just me, or has the word "Detail" turned into an oxymoron that is opposite of what a detail is?

When you detail your car, as I understood it, that is when you give it a super cleaning so to speak, inside and out, and polish out the imperfections in the paint, polish the metal surfaces, protect all the surfaces, etc.

But you go to a care care department and every single item that has the word "Detail" in the name is exactly the opposite. It is what you do in between thorough detailing but rather something quick and easy to maintain the appearance. At least the Meguiar's products have the word "Quick" in them, not so with a lot of the competitor's products. They manage to leave the word "quick" out, and you have just a "Detail spray."

The one item in my original car care kit that I had bought at Amazon, "Quick Interior Detailer," has sat unused on my shelf for 3 months or so. It just never occurred to me exactly what that would be, so the thought of it just puzzled me.

So when I finally got the whim to look at the label in the last week or so, it says "the fastest way to clean, shine and protect all interior surfaces. Meguiar's Interior Quick Detailer Spray maintains the look and feel of interior plastic, vinyl, leather, rubber, metal and audio/video equipment. The safe, high lubricity formula lifts off dirt, grime, spills, and fingerprints without buildup. Nano chemistry offers the maximum UVA/UVB protection, which helps prevent fading and cracking."

So kind of an all-purpose interior cleaner and protectant. Pretty cool stuff actually. And that is actually what it says on the front, "Cleans & protects all interior surfaces." And I liked how it looked on my dash.

But as a Joe Consumer perusing the car care section at Wal-Mart, that bottle would have stayed on the shelf just like it did in my garage for 3 months. If it had been called "All-purpose interior cleaner and protectant," well maybe I would have bought it.

Anyway, I find it ironic that the word "detail" in the car care products world has become reserved for items that perform quick touch-ups rather than what we think of as detailing.

It is used to give the impression that you could get that "fresh detailed look" or similar results to an actual detail with a product as simple as a spray and wipe. QD is good at prolonging the results of a detail.

Hey, at least in the UK we don't call it "Quik Interior Valeter".

          That is way too funny.

I rarely apply traditional interior dressings anymore, after using APC Plus or APC I usually dress all the surfaces with QID.

I wish it was available in the gallon size. I go through a three bottles of it every two weeks.

Speaking of QID, is there some reason I still have yet to see the new formula in any stores? I too go through it fast so I keep ending up buying more, and so far it's all been the old formula.

Could just be the suppliers in your area bought in very large quantities and are still heavily stocked with the old stuff. We haven't made any of that formulation, or packaged in the old bottles, in several months now.
