  • Tire care products

I just put a set of Michelin LTX M/S2 tires on my F-150. In reading about caring for them they recommended using only their products for care of their tires because of ingredients that can damage the tires in comercially available products. I realize they are playing it safe and trying to sell their stuff also. Here is a link to the info. michelinman.com/tire-care/tire-care-products

Does Meguires have compariable line of products that will protect & clean tires and wheels?

    Re: Tire care products

From the description on Michelin's website it sounds as though they are describing a water based dressing when talking about their tire shine product. They mention it being suitable for use to "protect rubber and vinyl trim, such as weather stripping and instrument panels."

Our M40 Professional Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner is probably the Meguiar's product that best fits this description (it's dead on, actually) but you could also use our Natural Shine or Supreme Shine Protectants, or Hyper Dressing from our Pro Detailer Line. All of these are popular products, and they are all water based. Of course, that means that they will wash off in a heavy rain or after a couple of car washes, but that's the nature of water based dressings. M40 is going to be the top line of these products, and it is fantastic on rubber trim, weather stripping, etc.

Hyper Dressing is nice because it is dilutable, which alters it's gloss level. A lot of people will buy a gallon and then have two different spray bottles mixed up - one at 4:1 dilution for a low sheen (interiors, wheel wells, engine bays) and 2:1 for a higher gloss (tires, interiors).

From what I've always heard a company can not deny a warranty claim based solely on your failure to use a specified proprietary maintenance product unless they give you said product for the life of the original item.

One sometimes run into claims that popular tire dressings can damage tires, but has anyone ever seen it happen?

The Michelin website specifically mentions petroleum distillates and paraffinic hydrocarbons as destructive to tire rubber. Two questions: (1) Are they in fact destructive to tire rubber? (2) Do any Meguiar's tire products contain them?

With specific regard to petroleum distillates, there certainly are some that can damage rubber. You have to remember that petroleum distillate is a very broad sweeping term. Depending on the level of distillation, these products can be extremely powerful solvents that you wouldn't want to ever apply to rubber, plastic, vinyl, or paint. Certainly these are products that you would only handle while wearing protective gear - gloves, goggles, etc.

But on the far end of the refining process you have food grade petroleum distillates, including end user products like lip balms.

Beyond that, the amount of such ingredients used in a given product can play a role as well. Basically what you're looking at is the difference between a solvent based dressing and a water based dressing. As with anything, there are right and wrong ways to make them.

As for Meguiar's line of tire dressings, any and all of them are perfectly safe for regular use on your tires. If they weren't we'd be buying for new tires for people every few hours given the amount of these products we sell! And that is just simply not happening!

I honestly believe Meguiars has the widest selection of choices for your tire dressing needs.

I use All Season Dressing, M40, and sometimes Hyperdressing.

I have a shelf full of Meguiars stuff in my garage but no M40. I do appeciate the info though & will get some tomarrow.

Do any of your products provide UV protection?

I assume a garage helps a lot for UV protection.
