  • Black F150 With Swirls

Hello all, first time poster. I'm basically getting more interested because I can't seem to get this finish to look good. This is a 2001 Ford F150, black clearcoated finish. I understand this to be a soft paint. No doubt the finish has been damaged by my enthusiastic and uneducated exuberance. To include inexperienced application of a rotary buffer, no regard for proper applicators for products, anxiously applying wax in an unshaded area, compounding when not necessary, etc.

This past weekend I clay barred and then applied SwirlX to try to remove the swirls. As you can see the swirlsa re still there. To date I have been doing everything by hand. So maybe a reapplication with Swirl or ScratchX with a machine may yield acceptable results. I will invest in the DA, it just saves so much time and my body, plus I think it will yield more consistent results.

I need some advice and steps to get back to square one. What shoudl I do to restore this to a deep, wet, lustery finish. I don't want to make anymore mistakes so I need the products, applicators, technique if you can.

Any advice woudl be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That is a lot of damage on a lot of surface area - nothing that can't be corrected, but doing all that by hand on a vehicle that size is, well, why power tools exist.

Too bad you're so far away as we'd love to have this vehicle as a demo car for a Saturday Detailing 101 Class. We love using heavily swirled black vehicles with paint that is in otherwise good shape - the end results are really dramatic!

We would go at this finish with a G110v2, a few W8207 Soft Buff 2.0 polishing pads and a bottle of Ultimate Compound. That's what we use every Saturday and we consistently obtain outstanding results - just look through the Saturday Class Pictures threads and you'll see what we mean.

If you really want to rescue this paint...invest in the Dual Action polisher. It will be the BEST money you will ever spend! And your arms will thank you for it!

Trust us. That is a lot of paint to correct by hand. Get yourself a G110 v2.0 You will be thanking yourself in the long run.

Let me put it to you this way:

About two years ago, I had a dark red (maroon) F150 extended cab (2005 model year). I had some swirling. I went after it by hand. I got finished. The results were amazing. I will NEVER do that again. Ordered a Megs G110 the next day. You'll thank me. Just get proper tools. As stated above, this is why power tools exist.

I'm actually surprised it still looks that bad after apply swirl-x by hand. I would think that if applied properly the swirl-x should have done a better job. What was your method, wash, clay, then swirl-x? Did you use a clean pad, was the truck clean, etc.? How bad did it look before you applied the swirl-x?

Thanks for your responses. I am awaiting delivery of my new DA as we collaborate here.

I did the proper sequence. Wash, dry, clay, then SwirlX. At one point I had hit this vehicle with a rotary and a compounding, so I've done some damage over the years.

Once I get the DA I'm going after it with the UC. Then maybe another app of SwirlX, and then Tech Wax.

Hopefully that will work. I've considered using the glaze, but need to see how the UC does, first.

Not to worry; I am a total novice and had a black 97 Ford Ranger in worse shape than that. I did the wash/clay/UC with the yellow pad on speed 5/SwirlX with the black pad on speed 4/NXT wax and had GREAT results. My only advice is to work small sections at a time (I did 2'X2' sections). It took me 3 passes, one vertically, one horizontally and one diagonally with the UC. Sounds like alot, but with the v2 DA, it was not that bad.

                  Good luck.
