  • Taping

Just got a G110 V2 and am new to machine detailing so I have a question.

I realize the importance of taping surfaces that will not be worked on like plastic parts etc, but why should I tape off the edges of two panels that are next to each other.

I know the paint is thinner at the edges, but is a DA powerful enough to strip off paint here?

The main thing I'm confused about is what about the paint underneath the tape at the edges? It needs to be corrected too, so how is this done if you have to tape it up? If you leave it taped up, you'll have defects that haven't been corrected near the edges and corrected paint everywhere else.

With a DA you shouldn't have to worry about burning through paint. Just be aware of the edges and the amount of pressure you are applying. A lot of detailers tape the edges because of they are using the rotatry or they are trying to prevent the compound getting in cracks or on the rubber strips.

I never tape edges (for the DA). Maybe I'm just lucky but I have never burnt an edge with the DA. I have with a rotary once on a BMW but was able to use touch up paint to hide it (with the owners knowlage and permission). I figure the time it takes to tape off a car I can wipe off any residue between panels when using a DA. I do tape when using the rotary and a wool pad.

When you are using the rotary, how do you correct the area under the tape at the edges?

Is it done by hand instead, left alone, or something else?

You would be able to do it by hand, a DA with a spot buffing pad or even a rotary (very carefully of course) using a spot buffing pad.
