Re: Fading Clear Coated Red Paint?

I talked to a friend who has had success using 3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound. I stopped by NAPA down the road to take a look at the stuff. It apparently removes sanding scratches of up to 1000 grit and finer. This worries me as It sounds like it can be quite nasty stuff and I don't think the 3M products are DA friendly. I would hate to drop more money into the Microfiber DA system if I can achieve success with M105 and a burgundy cutting pad.

I really need some feedback here and some recommendations. Thanks!

This doesn't look like sanding scratch to me. But it is very difficult to tell from a picture.

Based on the pattern I see in the area about half way up, next to the reflection of the trees, it looks more like the paint is crazing, developing small cracks. Crazing is common in older paint.

Hopefully, it's not and you'll be able to buff it out. Give a test spot a try and keep your fingers crossed.

If it is crazing, the only way to fix it is a repaint. Until then you may be able to shine it up a bit, basically polishing the spaces in between the cracks.

I was thinking crazing too but why is it only in some sections and not the entire roof. Also, the sunroof is not in the picture but it looks rosy and faded but with tiny scratches. M07 as before restores the depth but not as deep gloss as the rest of the paint.

Do a test spot with your UC on a yellow pad, speed 5 and see what happens.

If not, you can try M105. If not, you may have to purchase the DAMF system.

From the photos, I have a feeling that is correctable..

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

            More Pictures...

Not sure if it's really crazing anymore. I did a 2"x2" spot by hand with M105 and the reflection of scratches was reduced by about half. Still not enough to make them completely disappear.

Wow, it's still tough to tell.

That first close up you just posted does kinda look like crazing now.

The little scratches appear to be oriented in all different directions rather than concentric around the light source (like swirls) or all in the same direction (like most sanding marks).

But the other pics just look like typical swirls / marring to me

Final bump... I guess this pic of where the roof meets the windshield trim confirms crazing?
