  • How long does it take you to detail?

I just did my first two paying details.. well, not really. They're family and I told them I wanted to detail their cars for experience and also for some before/after photos to use when I put my website together. I said I'd do it for free, but they paid me anyway... altough definately not what I'm wanting to charge.

I'm wondering if my times are average or if I'm taking too long?

The first car was a 2006 Mustang GT, it took me 8 hours. Former smokers car (he quit a couple of years ago), and there was overspray all over the car (parked outside next to a building that was getting painted).

    Wash
    Two-bucket method with GC shampoo
Washed wheels first, sprayed first with APC+ on wheels/wheel wells and tire foam on the tires, then scrubbed with soft bristle brushes
    Dried with water magnet

    Engine Bay
Rinsed with water, then sprayed everything with APC+, then scrubbed everything with soft bristle brush, rinsed again with water and let stand to dry. Later followed by Hyper Dressing 2:1, let it dwell for awhile, then wiped off excess. Wiped down painted areas (on hood, too) with APC+ first, then Last Touch, then UQW.

    Exterior
Clayed with mild clay and Last Touch 1:1
Went over car with UC, using Lake Country white pad on my G110v2
Applied one coat of NXT Wax with black LC pad
Applied Hyper Dressing to black trim and wheel wells
    Applied UQW to wheels
Applied aerosol Hot Shine Tire Coating to tires

    Interior
    Vacuumed carpet/seats
Cleaned everything with APC+ (leather seats, dash, door panels, door jambs, etc)
Applied GC leather spray to leather seats
Applied Ultimate Shine protectant to all vinyl surfaces (dash, door panels, console, etc)
Cleaned door jambs further with Last Touch 1:1, followed with UQW
Same thing for trunk, vacuumed, coated plastics, cleaned jambs as above
Treated carpeted surfaces with Odor Eliminator
Cleaned windows with Quik Glass cleaner inside and out

The second car was a 2001 Lexus ES300 with pearl white paint. It took me 9 hours. Owner is a heavy smoker, but the car is well taken care of (40,000 miles). It's always garaged (at least at night). The seats in this car were a nightmare!

I followed basically the same steps above, took me an extra hour because of a full back seat instead of just a 2+2 setup.

So is 8-9 hours about right for these kinds of detail jobs? If not, what can I do to decrease the time? I really busted my a$$, I don't see how I could cut time from anywhere. Maybe if I used something like D151 instead of UC and NXT, that would save me a step.

Re: How long does it take you to detail?

I don't detail for $$ at this point, although I have an eye in that direction for the future. From my own experiences with my vehicles the time it takes really depends on how well the car has been cared for up to that point.

For example, I had a 2004 PT Cruiser for about six months. Shortly after getting it, I joined MOL and really got into the detailing process. The first time I clayed it, it took me close to an hour to get it all done. When I clayed it again about three months later (having been methodical and timely with its care in between) it only took about 15 mins.

The first time I really did a full detail on it, I did everything but shampoo the seats and it was about a 5-6 hour deal.

The car I'm driving now is a 2006 PT Cruiser that appears to never have had any kind of detailing done to it. The paint is swirled, the seats are stained etc. I have been working on it off and on for about a month. The first session, I clayed the roof and hood only and that took almost two hours, a full bottle of QD and almost a whole clay bar. I spent another 2 hours just on the upholstery inside and it still wasn't where I wanted it and had to spend another 2 hours on it in the next session. It's now about 90% of where I would want it to be, but I expect another hour of work on it.

I've been taking care of my wife's truck during this entire time and now I can do a full detail on it in about 2-3 hours if I don't need to shampoo. That adds about an hour if I have to do that. The first time I did her truck it was about 6 hours to get it all the way I wanted it.

If you can build a base of steady repeat clients that have you doing upkeep on the car, I would suspect that you wouldn't spend as much time on subsequent detailings.

The one thing that I am working on is trying to get a step by step process down so as to be more efficient rather than jumping from task to task at random.

It depends on the condition of vehicle, & the extent of detail you want. It also depends on how much a customer wants to spend.

I would say your well within a reasonable timeframe for the work you did. When I do a 'complete" detail (int.ext, eng) I would take between 6-10 years to complete depending on the condition of course. 6 hours would be an average time for me.

Wow! You take longer detailing a car than I keep mine.

Re: How long does it take you to detail?

This will depend on prior condition of the car and the quality of paint defect removal you performed. I would need to see pictures for an accurate judgement.

But I think that 8 hours is a good time to fully detail a car at about 80% correction.

99% correction is unpredictable. It took me well over 24 hours to do my car....

Two details that come to mind with this post are a red 1996 Mustang GT and my mothers 2006 Trailblazer. The GT took me all of 2 days start to handing the keys back to the owner. This included everything but the engine as I wasn't confident in detailing engines yet. The owners were looking to sell the car and considering a repaint before the selling as it was badly faded. I brought the car back by hand to looking spectacular. The only part I couldn't save was the front bumper cover as bug stuff, rock chips and the like had eaten away the paint at places down to the plastic material. The Trailblazer took me a full 8 hours the first time and I currently have it whittled down to just under 5 hours depending on how many frappachinos my mother and daughter spill in the car. And this is working at a moderate pace with waxing by hand with a cleaner wax.

I would say the amount of time it takes you. Is very dependent on the condition of the paint. 6-10 hours seems right. But as with every thing in life. There are exceptions to the rule.

I guess we need a definition on what constitutes a detail. I need probably between 6-10 hours just to polish paint and apply a protective sealant, depending on the size of the car. This wouldn't include washing, or the time it takes for me to set up my gear or putting everything away when I'm done.

I spent 5 hours on my sisters Honda Civic today. Although, on the exterior I only clayed, Colorx, GC Carnauba Plus (freakin' awesome wax!!!!!!) followed by some UQW. I also cleaned up the headlights.

I did an overhaul on the interior though. Wish I took some pics. I'm doing my moms Honda Civic tomorrow, perhaps I will take some before and after pics.

Re: How long does it take you to detail?

It took me 5 hours to clean and detail the interior and trunk of my wife's 2005 Altima. Used QID and NXT Tech Protect on all the plastic, APC+ on all the seats, floor, and mats, and D120 Glass Cleaner. Yes her car was dirty!

What took the longest was to get all of the specks off the carpet, just seemed real time consuming to get it clean. I just saw another post where someone uses a sticky lint roller on the carpets. Saw they do make these things about the size of a paint roller, instead of a little handheld one. Going to give that a try next time as they work great on my home theater speaker grilles and subwoofer. Might also work well on plush seats.

I also bought a carpet brush attachment for the DA polisher from ADS:

This worked wonders on salt stains in the carpet, without much effort.

For me, it depends on the condition of the vehicle. If the vehicle was quite grimy, it will take longer than the usual 6 hours and that was just the exterior detailing- another 4 hours on interior and another 4 on the engine bay.

But lately, I keep our vehicles tidy enough so I won't have to spend long hours on detailing. Usually it takes me 2-3 hours (washing, spraying a spray-on wax, glass, interiors, tires).

What a sweet tool! I'll have to pick one of those up! What speed do you set the DA to for that?
