  • Cleaning wheel at a car show?

I'll be taking my Mach 1 to the 40th Anniversary Mustang Celebration in Nashville next month. It'll be entered in a judged car show & will be driven to & from the event (from Memphis=3 hour+drive). I know that brake dust WILL be on the wheels by the time I get to the show. What is the best way to safely remove this dust (factory wheels are clearcoated) when a water supply isn't available for washing? I want to remove the dust, but I don't want to scratch the wheels either

I'm not a wheel expert, but I would think that a quick detailer of some type would do the job...I would let the wheels cool off before applying anything, and I might would apply it to the cloth instead of the wheel...Just my .02 worth.

In the past I've brought a box of disposable blue shop rags with me. I use final detail, but quick detailer or final inspection would work great as well. I've found you can't quite get all 4 with one towel so I use one per 2 wheels. Use the detailer liberally and it removes the brake dust quite nicely. You might also want to bring along a pair of latex gloves so you don't end up with brake dust all over your hands.
      Later,

Thanks for some great tips! I was hoping the QD that I already have would be a safe way to remove the metallic brake dust.

I have always used a damp MF towel with QD on wheels then buff with a dry one.......just my 2cents

Wow, a Chevy guy wanting pics of a Ford show. Thats pretty cool! :p Don't worry, I saw the most impressive black car at a show & shine yesterday, and it was a late model Camaro SS. The paint was perfect!!

Here is a pic of my Mach 1 at our SVTOA of Memphis Hooters Show & Shine yesterday. We had great weather & a lot of good looking cars.

                Hi Matt,

I would only add that you should mark the MF towel that decide to use for your wheels. Once a MF has come into contact with break dust it should be a dedicated "wheel" MF. Tiny bits of metallic break dust on paint would be bad deal, even after washing the tiny particles can remain in the towel. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I figured marking the MF would be a good idea. I ordered my Meguiars supply list last night. Should have all of it by the end of the week! I also picked up some NXT Booster Wax at Wal-Mart this afternoon. I thought that may be a good thing to have at the show for a quick shine.
