Time to grow up and take some responsibility for your actions, maybe you will learn a lesson by throwing a couple hundred dollars away to the state. Good luck if you fight it things have changed, cops are required to show up, and you have no chance of winning so I hate to break it to you, but pay the ticket and if your going to speed I would suggest 5-7 over your more likely to get away with that.

It's just a speeding ticket. Simply show up in court with one of your parents and take your medicine. Don't try to make it complicated. Don't try to make any excuses, be respectful to the judge (but don't kiss up), pay your fine and move on. Your insurance rates may or may not go up. You'll just have to wait and see. I've been driving for over fifty years and have had a few speeding tickets. (Maybe ten or so.) Most were only a few miles over the limit, but one was like yours and it occurred at about the same age. Must be a "hormonal thing". Lighten up a bit, OK?

If I am understanding this correctly, you got the ticket in NC?

Used to live there and traffic court isn't such a big deal. I was a couple years older than you when I got my first traffic ticket out there. My advice:

        1. Realize at 17 that you know nothing and go to court with that in mind as a humble young man who made a lapse in judgement. In other words, yes sir no sir to the court ands accept whatever they say even if you don't like it.

        2. Make sure you dress for the occasion. A shirt and tie is a good idea as it shows respect for the court.

        3. When you get there, pay close attention to what the DA says ahead of time. They usually have an address to let everyone know their options. Usually for a plea of guilty, they will shave a few MPH off the final verdict.

        4. Once the judge gives his verdict they usually send you to this office to pay the fines. A lot of times, you can get a payment plan if the fines and court costs are high. Make an arrangement but make sure to keep it! Missing the payments can result in a warrant. Chances are since you live out of state, they won't come get you but if you ever get pulled over, you will have some issues.

        Good luck!

To start with let me say it would be easier to name the states that have not given me a ticket then those that have.
First thing to do is call the prosecutors office and inquire as to wether or not they have a deferment program available for first time offenses. Many states offer programs where judgement is witheld while certain requirements are met such as going 12 months without a moving violation or saftey classes etc. (Indiana and Kentucky come to mind)If done properly then the ticket goes away and your record is cleaned after the alloted time.. Some prosecutors will allow a plead down to a lesser offense and a fine. (To some counties its all about the money). If a attorney is your last option then I usually ask a clerk in the prosecutors office who would they use in my case.A few phone calls will give you the info you need to make an informed decision without hitting the panic button. Be polite and don't be afraid to ask questions. Paul S
