  • Question about origin of products

I am trying to find out if the meg's polishing, buffing, cutting pads and back plates are Made in USA?

    Thanks for the help

Re: Question about origin of products

Material’s and fabrication for our buffing pads and backing plates are sourced domestically, as well as, all over the globe. Regardless of the source, our products must meet strict specifications that many departments here at Meguiar's develop.

Just curious, why you are asking ?

Re: Question about origin of products

I try and buy everything Made in USA, i am a big fan of buying domestically and not having any goods shipped from half way around the world only to find the quality is junk. So far i have been extremely successful at buying 95% of things in my life Made in USA,

My experience has been that goods made here in the USA are the best and have yet to be let down.

Also environmentally speaking i prefer to have things made as close to me as possible, and to keep jobs here, where more employees are treated fairly and get a better wage

I admire your sentiments and your loyalty to US made /assembled products. However companies must make a profit to survive and need to make sometimes difficult outsourcing decisions to protect their bottom line

Re: Question about origin of products

i understand profitability, but one of the only reasons people outsource to china is the cost that chinese pay to import US goods, its over 30% tax on those goods that come from the US, then to export to the US they get a .01% tax, there for making their pockets get fatter to have it sent over here.

Companies are just greedy, as i have said i only buy goods made in USA, so there a thousands of companies surviving the thriving by making goods in the USA, give the people a chance and they will surprise you

yeah i have seen that originally posted on a blog, and thought the same thing, and when people say well a company needs to make profits, this shows they are b/c that is all i buy, especially car parts, b/c the parts that are better made are all coming from the USA, i mean we have better automotive safety standards then almost anywhere, i think we do have the highest, but still when you see the quality difference between goods made here and over seas there is really no doubt in my experience where i will continue to buy from!

Re: Question about origin of products

It's been many years since my macro-economics class at college, but...

With international trade agreements, materials and components can be manufactured in the United States and then shipped to other countries for assembly. The simple premise of Buying USA to keep jobs in America may have the counter-effect in this scenario. If you refuse to buy a product because it's final assembly was completed in another country, you may be putting an American who manufactured a component used in the final assembly out of work.

An example: Honda automobiles manufactured in Marysville, Ohio. Most of the major components are manufactured in Japan for QA purposes, then shipped to Ohio for final assembly by American workers. It's a reverse of the example I listed above, but it's the same principle. You really have to do some exhaustive researching and an extremely thorough audit trail to make sure that a finished product is entirely of foreign origin.

i see what you are saying and in my quest for excelence i make it a point to find out all i can, for example i need to buy some undershirts and wanted to get ones made with organically American grown cotton, then made in USA and sure enough after a quick google search i found them.

I like to buy American as i said becuase of the major environmental impact that it has being made overseas from the shipping to the lack of pollution controls that are used when producing overseas.

You would be really surprised to know that over 60% of the parts that make up the atleast the civics made in USA are made here, the engines, body parts, interior trim etc., but cars are very difficult b/c there are so many parts that automobile manufactures themselves don't make at all

Exactly. Another example: Thinking of buying a Ford? Know that many of the components and even some major sub assemblies are manufactured in Mexico in maquiladoras along the border, and then shipped to US manufacturing plants for final assembly. This is the nature of international trade agreements like NAFTA, or the now defunct Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI). But also know that the United States RARELY ends up with the short end of the stick in trade agreements.

Another thing to consider: There are corollary domestic jobs created by the import of foreign goods and products. Shipping, freight, dock workers, domestic transportation, and retail sales workers are just a few Americans who could suffer from a total refusal to buy any product that is not 100% American. But that is how intertwined global business has become.

Sometimes its also useful to look at it from a different perspective. If I had to follow the same approach from my side, I wouldn't be using Meguiars
