  • Why 2 coats?

I read that the reason to apply 2 coats is to ensure proper coverage of the whole car. If I am careful enough that I don't miss any part, there is no need for the 2nd coat in turn of durability/shine, right?

Furthermore, I read some of you like to apply 2 coats of NXT. My understanding is NXT is a all-in-one product that it consists of a mild cleaner. So, the 2nd coat will remove some of the first coat. Does it make more sense to use pure wax, like M21, Yellow Wax as 2nd coat?

In my opinion with NXT or a cleaner wax, a careful application of one coat is good enough. Yes, it makes more sense to use a pure wax as a second coat.

I wax my vehicles about once every eight weeks. I see no need for two coats with this schedule.

Any ingredients in NXT 2.0 that might be classified as "cleaners" are there in such small quantities as to be inconsequential when it comes to true cleaning ability.

While you don't need to apply two coats, we recommend it only because when applying a wax very thinly it's easy to miss a spot - hence the "two coats to ensure uniform coverage and appearance".

Having said that, plenty of people like to apply a coat of a synthetic product (NXT, M21) and follow with a carnauba like Gold Class or M26.

I would also recommend a synthetic topped with a carnauba.

IME two coats makes a visible difference, even if you've been careful. Not sure why. Perhaps the second coat adds to the LSP 'density' rather than 'thickness'.

Whatever the reason, there is a definite aesthetic difference when applying a second coat.

Some see the difference, some don't. It's a bit subjective.

I follow the 2 coat suggestion. It seems to me, that there is always the possibility of missing a area, like Mike states. I would have to think the odds of missing the same spot 2 times in a row is very small.

With as often as most of us wax out cars/trucks/bikes, missing a small spot doesn't really make all that much difference. Think about it. Can you really see places that you might have missed?

I use overlapping passes, first side to side and then front to back and may repeat this a second time. I use this same process with both a pc or by hand. If using a pc I go back and apply wax to all of the edges by very carefully by hand. No, I don't tape off the trim. Again, just a very careful application.

I guess by now, you have figured out that I have taken the cure for OCDD (obsessive compulsive detailing disorder).

Wax on, my friends. There is hope. again

                    Re: Why 2 coats?

every now and then i'll do 2 coats. Like this last weekend i put 2 coats of NXT on because this coming weekend i'm going to a Miata get together and those people are passionate about there rides. So i figured i better step up .

does it make me ocd because i put the first coat on in a horizontal pattern and the second in a vertical pattern???

Yep, and you are beyond the normal "cure". A couple of months of intense in-patient therapy may help.

Probably earns you a whole special category

The main reason I do 2 coats is to have a base of NXT2 sealant for durability and then a top of #26 carnuba for its added warmth/depth. At least that is what I tell myself (to avoid the OCD tag).

Maybe for a black car it would add "density". My car is silver and is well-maintained by Meguaire's products over the years.

Frankly, I do not see the difference between 1 coat and 2 coats.....
