  • Fix My Bumper

Just bought the car and parked it in the garage. Scraped the front bumper on the steps of the garage and it took off some paint. How do I fix this? I have access to a rotary buffer. Thanks for the info.

If it took the paint off the car then there is not much you can do, theres no paint to work on. Unless there are some surrounding areas that were scratched or scuffed,

The only way to correct paint loss is to repaint the affected area with some touch up paint.

That is what I was thinking. Can I use the rotary buffer to smooth out the paint?

You own a rotary buffer, but are you skilled with it? You can quickly cause problems with this tool if you aren't proficient with it, especially on a urethane bumper cover as the paint can be a bit more delicate here. Heat dissipation on this substrate differs from steel and you can quickly overheat an area and literally twist the paint if you over do it.

That said, depending on how much paint has been scraped off, you might be able to minimize the appearance of the damage, but odds are you aren't going to really fix it. Now, if what you're looking at is primarily paint transfer from something you came into contact with, that can usually be corrected quite successfully.

Thank you Michael. Should I return the rotary buffer? How do I get proficient in it? I bought it because I thought it would polish my car better. I have not used it yet.
But with the bumper. It took off paint. I ordered the touch up paint bottle that matches my color paint. Should I just carefully brush some on and let it dry and leave it alone...at least it will be black.
