  • Why does my hood end up "two-tone" after M21?

Ever since I been using M21, I notice that on my hood I get uneven coloration after I remove the sealant. I make sure to apply thin, even coats and everything else, but I always end up with this two tone type coloration afterward. Almost as if only certain areas have been prepared before hand, or got a coat of M7 or something... Very weird.

I tried wiping off with some UQD and such, but it does not do anything. Trying to figure out why this happens.

The surface was prepped before hand with Clay and paint cleaner, so it usually has a good pre-prep before the LSP.

Maybe it's not the LSP afterall, but I always notice it then. Any ideas to what may be causing it??

I would try to get photos, but its very hard to see... I doubt I would be able to pick it up in photos.

Appreciate any help! BTW, paint is Black Sand Pearl on a 2008 xB - OEM Paint Job.

You have used other waxes, and not seen this?

Well, before I got my bottle of M21 I used NXT 2.0 and NXT before that, and never noticed this issue.

Just weird... Wonder what is causing it to do this. When I wax again I may try NXT 2.0 again and see if I get same thing.

I just always happen to see it after I put on the LSP and never notice it before that.

How well do you shake up the #21 Sometimes you get this effect, if not properly shaken up.

Not sure why it would be...

Could have gotten splashed with something maybe, and some residue is still on parts of the paint?

I can get splotchy stuff if I dont let it dry enough, esp when it is damp out.

I do shake up all my product before using. Maybe I just did not do it enough?

And when I did my last LSP, it was around 50* outside. But last summer, the same thing would happen when it was 60* or 80*. Similar results.

I will have to try another LSP next time and see if I get the same thing. Something is fishy though

Today I may stop at the auto store and pick up a new bottle of NXT 2.0 and the new carnanuba if they stock it yet... I have always had issues with this M21 since I got it (more difficult to remove, more steaking, this "two tone" effect), which I never had with NXT 2.0. Maybe I just had a 'dud' bottle with too much/little of something in it!

I will try, if I have time later to re-clay and apply the LSP, may run a light pass of swirl-x first just to make sure the paint is clean and ready to go. Ill do just the hood and see if I can get it "fixed".

I have seen some posts where alcohol is used to strip the paint to evaluate for scratches. Others would know if that idea applies here. Good luck, and good post.

isoprophyl alcohol is my best friend sometimes. It stips away all waxes, sealents, oils, etc while being perfectly safe and evaporating away clean. Spray the 2-tone areas, wipe and see if the color problems are still there.

Re: Why does my hood end up "two-tone" after M21?

                    Alright, a little update...

Stopped at autozone and picked up a new bottle of NXT 2.0, the new Carnauba Plus, and UQW

I clayed the hood again and ran #80 via PC to clean/polish/prep the surface.

I then applied NXT 2.0 by hand, as light as I could apply. I let set for about 20mins and wiped off. I notice it has some of this "streaking" again, so I sprayed with QD and it cleared up for the most part.

I then put my coat of the new Carnauba Plus and let it set for 20-25mins. I wiped off with a brand new microfiber (the meguiars ultimate wipes) and noticed this two-tone come back.

I sprayed with some UQD and it cleared up for the most part, but I had to do it a few times. It seems to be a technique issue with me and the LSP or something. I feel like I put as thin of a coat as I can and let set until it passes the "swipe test", so why do I have such a hard time? Its about 60* out today, but with low humidity.

So I found it was the LSP, but do not know why I get this product streaking on removal...

I'v noticed when I apply wax and take it off the part that I waxed is darker then the unapplied part. And I use NXT 2.0.

I am not comparing waxed to unwaxed portions of paint, but the look of the finish after I waxed. It has a "darker/lighter" streaking. Something with my LSP process though, I have discovered.
