  • Best Metal Polish for uncoated TITANIUM?

    Hey guys,

I was lucky enough to pickup a nice titanium frame road bike this past weekend and I wanted to see what metal polish products Megs would recommend? I have to be REALLY careful because the frame is on the expensive side, especially for a bicycle!

In my cabinet I have some NXT All Metal Polysh, M93 Marine Line Metal Polish and numberous waxes (NXT 2.0, M21, Collinite, etc.)

Best I can tell, the surface is brushed and uncoated titanum. Would love if one of the Mike's could chime in with a suggestion!

    Thanks in advance.

I would be worried about a polish affecting the brushed look....

As stated above....If it is brushed and uncoated, you should probably stay clear of a "metal polish" due to the fact that it will slowly smooth out the brushed look....

Have you called the frame Mfg to see what they recommend ?

From what I've heard, if it is titanium, you won't have to worry about removing anything. Titanium is such a hard metal until you won't be removing any defects or brushed texture by polishing. My brother has a titanium wedding band. If he ever gets a scratch or scuff in it, he takes it back to the store and they give him a new one. This is because scuffs and scratches CANNOT be polished out. The way I see it, if the jewelry store could buff out the scuffs, they would. Instead, they give him a new one. Trust me on this, he's had several wedding bands replaced due to scuffs.

Back in a former life I was a bit of an accomplished bicycle racer and several of my friends rode Merlin framesets - all titanium, brushed and uncoated. Merlin's own recommendation at the time was to wash the frame with soap and water and then lightly go over the surface with a ScotchBrite Pad, in linear motions only.

Having said that, you might want to check the frame builders website for care recommendation.

That is exactly what I hear from Litespeed (who bought Merlin I believe). I was kinda hoping you could apply X and then that would keep road grime from sticking to the frame. If not, no biggie. I'll still keep it nice and clean.

            Thanks for the help!

Hey, if your gonna ride, it's gonna get dirty - no two ways about it. And if it's a mountain bike, it's gonna get muddy. And scratched. How muddy and how scratched are directly proportionate to how much fun you had. With a road bike, how much road grime it picks up is directly proportionate to how hungry you are during and after the ride. Track bikes stay pretty clean though!

Eat and drink often, and clean the bike after every ride. You'll both last much longer that way.

If it is brushed, but still pretty smooth, you may be able to get some wax on it if you wanted.

I would just keep it clean with some APC is all. Maybe try some UQW to make clean up a bit easier?

The pipes on my motocross bikes are ti. As mentioned by Mike just use soap and water and lightly scrub with scotch brite and a little WD-40.

                      Congrats on the new ride!

I suppose a coat of wax might help the grime stick a bit less in theory, but I doubt you’d notice much difference.

Like Mike said, if you ride it, it’ll get dirty. But the great thing about bare Ti it that it doesn’t show dirt as much as most paint colors and it cleans up real easy.

If you just want to keep it a nice rider (rather than a concours garage queen) I think you’ll find it’ll rarely need much more than a spritz’n wipe with something like a QD. If your local roads tend to have a bit of tar try Gold Class Bug N' Tar Remover.

When I picked up my frameset my builder recommended a spray and wipe cleaner for commercial kitchens (which tend to have lots of bare, brushed metal surfaces).

Set aside towels for dedicated bike use. I wouldn’t want to take the chance of rubbing what was on the bikes onto a car. I got some dark colored microfibers that I use exclusively on the bikes.
