  • Brass restoration

    Hello all,

I am refinishing some brass railing on the interior of a restaurant. I've used 320-600 wet sand paper followed by Wenol metal polish. I'm almost there as far as the finished result I'm trying to achieve. My question is how to protect the brass long term after I finish. Do any of you know the best way to seal the brass after completion of buffing. I'm thinking of a Meguiars wax but no sure if that would be the best for this application. Thanks for any advice you could provide.

    Thanks.

A wax could certainly be used, though if the rail will be handled, it would wear off quickly, and possibly be a safety problem from being too slick.

There is also the Metal Guard in the Marine Line, though it doesn't get talked about a lot. Tim Lingor has used it I believe, and could answer questions about it.

Sounds like to maintain the finish, the employees need some more side work.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't even think of the Marine Line. I'll take a look there.

I've used a sealant to protect polished brass with good results. However, if its going to get handled, it won't last very long.

I'm with Tyler - maintaining the brass should fall on the employees during the slow times of the day. Busy work, oh yeah.

Been there, done that. That's how I know how it needs to be maintained in that kind of environment. Brass will dull after only a few days, depending how busy they are and how often it gets touched. For quick and constant maintenance, they need to get the polishing wipes. I've forgotten the name of them, but they came in a white tube with a purple label and the wipes were orange. Good stuff. Worked on everything!
