  • Car Covers -- Good or Bad?

    Hey Guys,

I regularly use a Mopar cover for my Dodge Charger, especially after detailing to keep it looking good longer (my garage is kind dusty).

It's a good quality car cover, but do you think all the covering and uncovering is scratching my paint? (micro-scratching at least)

Yeah, I'd be worried about that.

A little dust isnt dangerous, though not as attractive.

I got rid of mine because there was no way I could put it on or take it off without causing friction against the paint, especially around the bumper covers and mirrors.

I used to just use a california car duster to wipe off the dust that has settled on the surface and then use a detailer to go back over the paint before taking my mustang out of the garage.

Don't like the thought of putting on and removing (usually by yourself) a rough feeling textured cloth to begin with that's going to be rubbing against the surface of my paint over and over again.

too bad they dont make a microfiber inside car cover that still allows breathing etc. That way the only thing touching the paint on the vehicle is microfiber cloth, also use the microfiber around all edges etc.

I am pretty sure they do, or some sort of soft interior. But they are usually for indoor use only. An indoor cover can be sized a bit looser as well.

But the MF will still be dragging dust back and forth, like dragging a dry Supreme Shine on a dusty car. The problem/nuisance is always having the car clean to use it.

well see, i always figured whoever puts a cover on would make certain the car is clean prior to putting it on, isnt that the point, to keep a clean car clean?

I use a cover with no problems scratching, key is to wipe the car down prior to covering, Calif car duster is what I use and the cover I have has a real soft lining inside, the car is a weekend driver so it sits in the garage most of the time

I use one as well. I think the ticket here is to use one with a soft lining, almost a flannel like material.

I've got some cheaper covers and if I use them, I always lay down large 100% cotton towels first on the surface of the paint and than put the cover on. Takes awhile to get just right but prevents scratches.

I used to do the same thing Andrew. I had 3 soft blankets that I covered the car with prior to the car cover. I stopped using them when I bought one with a soft lining.
