  • Decal removal

Hello guys...i removed some decals from a car before polishing it and there is a huge difference in the colour that it was under the decal and the rest of the car...i tried to wet sand it with no luck.the paint is single stage and i almost removed all the paint without any luck for colour matching...Any ideas ?????

    Thanks

    Re: Decal removal

The color under the decal is more likely the real color of the paint.

So it is the rest of the car paint that needs worked on. Of course, you may never get a good match. I have a feeling Cyprus is quite sunny, and probably fades things quickly.

      that's true
the problem is that non even with wet sanding is not coming back to the real colour....
the good thing is that it is a racing car and they are going to install new decals so i guess they have to install them above the previous decals

        Re: Decal removal

This is a common problem with colored finishes, it always has been. Today because of the clear coats and UV inhibitors the fading of a painted finish is minimized but it does occur.

Be careful when you wet sand. The finishes today are extremely thin you can go right through the clear coat or paint before you know it. I'd work on the panel in a small spot with something line M105 and M205 and see if it helps minimize the difference, if not then painting the whole thing might be the only solution.

Mate, is it the decals on the fender?

Hmm..Its a SS paint, and you have wetsanded to even out the paint surface but still can see ghosting, correct? I'm also interested to know this peculiar thing.

Thanks mate...i already did what you said and the colour matching is mission impossible with wetsanding and polishing....As i told above the owner is going to install new decals so he has to install them at the same place with the previous decals

              Re: Decal removal

As Murr pointed out, the issue is that the paint under the old decal is most likely the correct color, the original color. All the rest of the paint has been exposed to UV radiation and the color has faded, plus it has likely picked up some embedded dirt that has altered the color further. Hey, it's a race car after all!!! The areas under all the decals have been protected from UV, dirt, etc and so have better retained the true, original color. You can wet sand that area until you go all the way through the paint, and the color will never change. It's the other 99.2% of the finish that needs to be corrected to match the original paint that was just exposed.

Or let them put new decals on and let the car continue to sit in the sun for a good long while - the color will even out on its own. Over time.

                  Re: Decal removal

Since this is SS paint, why not try something with a lot of polishing oils such as M80 or a glaze like M07, that's going to be your best chance I would think to bring the paint back, just my two cents...

Why the glaze is going to bring the colour back?is there something inside that it will help?

                      Re: Decal removal

If the paint is dried out a bit, the oils can help moisturize it.

But not sure it will help a lot...

Since it's SS paint, there is a chance the oils in the polish will be able to bring some color back if it's faded, doesn't really do much on BC/CC paints, but SS paints it can darken the paint, it's worth a shot.
